Ryder Cup Format
Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.
Four-ball consists of each member of a two-man team playing their own ball. Four balls are in play each hole. The lowest of each teams two scores on each hole is counted. The team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole, and if the low scores are tied, then the hole is halved.
Foursomes consists of each two-man team playing one ball per hole with the players taking turns until each hole is complete. Golfers alternate hitting tee shots with one player leading off on odd-numbered holes and the other player hitting first on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, then the hole is halved.
In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, then the hole is halved. The captains determine before any of the matches start where each player will be slotted 1 through 12.
Ryder Cup Scoring
The three days of matches consist of 28 total matches, and each match is worth one point. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup matches. Should the two sides be tied after 18 holes, then the match is a draw and each side earns a halve (½ point). The first team to reach 14 ½ points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 draw, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it (Europe won in 2018).
Course tournament and info
Whistling Straits is a links style golf course that will play as a par 71 at 7,390 yards for the Ryder Cup.
- Course: Whistling Straits Golf Course
- Location: Mosel, Wisconsin
- Par: 71 / Yardage 7,390
- Date: Sept. 24-26, 2021
- Architect: Pete Dye
The 23-year-old links course was built along the shore of Lake Michigan. Hole No. 11 will play as a par 4 for the event instead of a par 5.
Kerry Haigh, the PGA of America’s Chief Championships Officer, notes that “Up until the weekend before the Ryder Cup event, the home captain can determine such things as the height of the rough, speed of the greens, the width of the fairways, and if he wants to make any architectural changes.”
Course set-up details including hole locations are determined the week of the event, and fall to a committee of representatives from both the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.
Whistling Straits will have fast greens and firm fairways, according to Chris Zugel, the director of agronomy for Golf Kohler. The setup is expected to be similar to the 2015 PGA Championship held at Whistling Straits, although the rough is not expected to be as penal or severe on the links style course. While there is no overall prevailing wind at Whistling Straits, holes 5-8 and 10-13 could play either into the wind or straight down wind if the breezes are out of the southwest and northeast.
