Rose Zhang Women’s US Open Favorite In Only Her Second Major Championship As A Pro

As the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open tees off from Pebble Beach Golf Links in northern California, 20-year-old phenom Rose Zhang is hoping to continue her ascent to a first major championship in just her third professional start. Zhang captivated the golf world by winning her LPGA debut a few weeks ago at Liberty National. Zhang, incredibly, was the pre-tournament favorite at Caesars Sportsbook with +1200 odds, an scenario that’s really hard to fathom for such a young player in PGA TOUR golf odds.
Here’s where the live odds stood after Round 1 Thursday. Zhang opened with a two-over-par 74 to sit tied for 39th place.
Insight On Rose Zhang Odds
Incredibly enough, Zhang opened as the consensus favorite (+1200) while participating in only her second major as a pro. Moreover, she won her first LGPA event on June 4, claiming first place in the Mizuho Americas Open while finishing 9-under par.
Interestingly, Zhang delivered the same score in a single round at Pebble Beach, the storied golf course on the precipice of the Pacific Ocean, setting the women’s course record last fall. She was only a sophomore at Stanford, commencing a record-setting run in which she became the first collegiate women’s golfer to win multiple NCAA championships. She has already risen to 45th in the women’s world golf rankings.
The 2023 U.S. Women’s Open marks her third tournament since turning pro in May.
Tiger-Like Rise
To find a PGA TOUR comparison to this level of betting respect for such a young player, you have to go back to the first major for Tiger Woods as a professional, at the 1997 Masters. Although he could have been had at one point at 50-1, bettors gobbled that up quickly. He closed at the start of the tournament as the 8-1 favorite, ahead of Greg Norman and Nick Faldo. He eventually went on to win the green jacket and captivate the sports world.
At his second major as a pro, Tiger Woods was a +450 favorite. Ernie Els won that U.S. Open. We’ll see if Zhang can capture her first attempt at the U.S. Women’s Open, behind held for the ladies at Pebble Beach for the first time in the event’s 70-year history.
