Rocket Mortgage Classic Betting Preview: Six Golfers In Top 20 Ready To Create Fireworks In Detroit

Rocket Mortgage odds Classic golf

Very little course history, golf stats or player performance charts are available to review as this is just the second year of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The event will have a different feel this year when players tee off at Detroit Golf Club on July 2, as it was originally scheduled to start May 28. There will be no fans at the course as PGA Tour protocols continue during the COVID-19 health crisis, and there will be a weaker field than the first three PGA Tour events following the hiatus.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic will also be the first major sports event in Michigan since the coronavirus pandemic led to the cancelation or postponement of sports in the US.

Last year, the players tore apart the renovated Donald Ross North course design (one hole from South course included). In total, 16 players shot scores of 15-under par or better and 45 players were double-digits under par. Detroit had 21 days of rain in May last year, and this year’s event in July will be dryer and hotter with temps expected to be in the high 80s with the rough grown out a bit more.

A look at the golf course at Detroit Golf Club with a hole-by-hole breakdown includes three reachable par 5s, with hole 7 yielding a scoring average of 4.55 and 48% birdies last year. The par 5 No. 17 also saw 48% of the players make birdie with a scoring average of 4.51. The tougher par 4s – as you watch and wager – are down the stretch with No. 16 (4.00 and 13% birdies) and No. 18 (4.11 and 14% birdies), along with No. 6 (4.10, 12% birdies).

Rocket Mortgage Classic betting odds

The Rocket Mortgage Classic power rankings don’t have as many highly-regarded or big name players this week, and the favorites are being given odds as low as they’ve ever been in a tournament. Bryson DeChambeau (+650), Webb Simpson (+1100) and Tyrrell Hatton (+1400) have all nudged up slightly from their opening odds Monday at DraftKings Sportsbook, and Hatton is +1700 at FanDuel Sportsbook. He also tops the PGA Tour in 2020 in True Strokes Gained metric at datagolf.

The next group of favorites shows Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Reed both +1600 at DraftKings and FanDuel, but Matsuyama is +1800 at BetMGM. Victor Hovland is +2000 across the board while Sunjae Im is +2000 at DraftKings and +2500 at FanDuel  – offering the biggest discrepancy in tournament win odds of the top 10 players in the betting market. Recall Reed (5th) and Matsuyama (13th) had the top finishes of this group in last year’s inaugural Rocket Mortgage Classic.

There is usually not much discrepancy in the odds to win the tournament for the top players compared to much greater odds variance for long shots 40-1 or higher. For example, Kevin Na is in that next group and he’s +3300 at BetMGM but +3500 at DraftKings to win the tournament. Na opened +4500 at DraftKings on Monday.

As you compare odds and make bets on some of the favorites, note these differences, which can continue to change as the tournament nears with betting interest.

Rocket Mortgage Classic finishing position

Also, finishing position is becoming a more popular and even prudent bet with such difficulty picking outright winners each week. That’s especially true in loaded fields like the first three events since the PGA Tour returned from hiatus during the Covid health crisis.

DeChambeau (-135) is essentially the same price at DraftKings and FanDuel to finish Top 10. But Simpson is +125 at DraftKings and +140 at FanDuel for Top 10 and +250 vs. +310 to finish Top 5. Hatton is +150 Top 10 and +300 Top 5 at DraftKings vs +185 and +340 at FanDuel.

An interesting choice and consideration is Rickie Fowler, who is +700 for a Top 5 finish and +340 for Top 10 at FanDuel Sportsbook, which is offering better finishing position on more players.

Notable players at longer odds

Nate Lashley (+15000 at DraftKings). Lashley was the last player into the Rocket Mortgage Field last year, and then won the event at odds as high as 250/1. His six shot win and 25-under-par total points out what we see nearly every week on Tour: longshots can win and finish high. Last week, eight players at 100/1 odds or greater finished Top 10 at the Travelers Championship.

Rickie Fowler (+3300 at DraftKings). Fowler has fallen to No. 31 in the World Golf Rankings, and he’s not one of the Top 8 players in the win market this week. Fowler’s form has him dropping as he’s missed two cuts in two events since the PGA Tour returned from hiatus. Fowler’s key stats don’t scream success, ranking No. 65 in SG: Putting and No. 93 in SG: Ball Striking. His SG: Approach stats are not even top tier ranking No. 70. But his short game and putting are too good and he’ll bounce back soon, noting too that six players that finished Top 10 last week had missed the cut in recent events. Top 5 is +700 for Fowler at FanDuel. Fowler entered last year’s Rocket Mortgage event ranked No. 14 in the world and finished T46. His success on other Donald Ross designs suggest he’ll bounce back and play much better this week.

Brandt Snedeker (+4500 across the board). Sneds is not in great form but he did shoot under par in all four rounds last week at the Travelers. His putting is still superb, and this year Top 20 in SG: Putting. His course fit and game are well suited here, and he showed off his short games skills with a T5 last year in the event when he went off at odds near 30/1. Snedeker has 9 PGA Tour wins and has won on other Donald Ross designs in 2012 at the Tour Championship (East Lake) and 2018 Wyndham Championship (Sedgefield).

Harold Varner (+7000 FanDuel). Varner has been playing well, and was the 36-hole leader at Colonial out of the PGA Tour break. He shot four rounds in the 60s last week and is likely to have a solid finish in Detroit. His putting can hold him back, but his long approaches to the green beyond 200 yards (5th) and 75-125 yards may allow him have shorter and more makeable putts this week where more birdies will be needed to contend. Varner is 17th in birdies or better gained over his last 50, but he ranks fifth in his past 12 rounds post-COVID layoff.

Erik van Rooyen (+6600 at DraftKings). Van Rooyen is still underrated and on the rise to No. 40 in the World Golf Rankings. His ball striking and driving accuracy are not a good fit this week, but the big bomber is No. 3 in driving distance and he’s one of the better Tee-to-Green players on Tour, ranking No. 30 in SG.

Top ranked players in Rocket Mortgage field

Six players in the top 20 of the World Golf Rankings will play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, three more than last year’s inaugural event. DeChambeau is the betting favorite, opening at around +600 odds to win, despite sitting behind Webb Simpson and Patrick Reed in the rankings.

  • Webb Simpson (5)
  • Patrick Reed (7)
  • Bryson DeChambeau (11)
  • Tyrrell Hatton (16)
  • Tony Finau (17)
  • Sungjay Im (20)
  • Hideki Matsuyam (23)
  • Rickie Fowler (31)
  • Kevin Na (34)
  • Kevin Kisner (38)

Reed finished fifth here last year. Matsuyama took 13th, while Fowler and Kisner tied for 46th.

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson will return to Detroit after missing the cut last year. Former world No. 1 and PGA Championship major winner Jason Day will also tee it up this week.

Defending champion Nate Lashley is now No. 82 in the world golf rankings, and he won by six shots last year – going very low with a 25-under par total.

Top 10 finishers in last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic returning for the 2020 event include: Nate Lashley (1st), Doc Redman (2nd), Wes Roach (T3), Rory Sabbatini (T3), Brian Stuard (T5), Ted Potter (T5), Patrick Reed (T5), Cameron Tringale (T5).

Donald Ross designs and results

East Lake, now host to the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta, is also a Donald Ross design. At the 2019 Tour Championship, these players in the Rocket Mortgage Field finished Top 12: Finau (7), Reed (T9), Matsuyama (T9, Kisner (T9), DeChambeau (T12). in the 2018 event, Matsuyama (T4), Simpson (T4) and Fowler (+T7) finished best. Snedeker won the 2012 event.

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design and host course for the Wyndham Championship. Snedeker (-21) won it wire-to-wire in 2018 for his most recent PGA Tour win and ninth of his career. Snedeker shot an opening round 59 and won by 3-shots over Simpson. The 2019 event was won by JT Poston with Simpson (2nd), Hovland (4th), Sunjae Im (T6) and Brian Harman (T6) top finishes.

Key stats

The Donald Ross design requires solid ball striking skills and accuracy off the tee. A classic and traditional tree-line course, the greens have some slope, but the players scores were still very low in year 1 of the tournament.
