Massachusetts Sportsbooks

As the looming Massachusetts sports betting market launch approaches, online sportsbooks and retail operators begin making deals. Retail Massachusetts sportsbooks are looking for digital partners to run their online betting platforms. These deals are being done behind the scenes we local racetracks anticipate the upcoming betting market.

Sports Betting Deals Being Made In Massachusetts

Operators who applied for licenses to launch Massachusetts sportsbooks were required to submit a survey to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. While not fully made public yet, the details of the submitted surveys indicate which operators are working with one another. The survey asks if companies have “an agreement to conduct or are in the process of negotiating an agreement.”

This is in regard to other operators. Local racetracks like Raynham Park, for example, would be looking for a partner to launch retail and online sports betting. A deal would have to be made with a commercial sportsbook for this to happen.

“We’re looking for a partner right now for retail and online,” said Chris Carney, owner of Raynham Park in an interview with MassLive.

Survey Could Reveal Potential Partnerships

In the survey, these deals are dubbed “licensee association.” Looking at the results of the submitted surveys could be used to predict which operators will partner with the local casinos. The three local casinos are the Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino. Each location has applied for betting licenses in the Old Bay State.

Each casino applied for a category one license which would grant a retail location along with up to two online skins. Partnering with these casinos would increase the chances of a commercial sportsbook gaining market access in Massachusetts.

It is likely the Massachusetts Gaming Commission included this section of the survey to help glean which operators would claim licenses through these partnerships. This would further aid the commission in determining which operators to grant licenses to.

A concern that many experts have raised to the commission involves the potential for operators claiming multiple licenses. It is possible for an operator to gain a license through a casino while also being granted an untethered license. The commission has stated that this manner will be discussed in meetings.
