Some of the biggest soccer clubs in the world began their preseason training matches over the weekend. After a thrilling Euro 2020 tournament, bettors are shifting their focus to the long domestic campaigns, including 2022 Premier League odds to win the championship.

Big names will get a bit of rest before joining academy players and understudies in camps. While coronavirus restrictions likely mean no exhibition tours around the world (the International Champions Cup will feature four top women’s teams this year in Portland), there is still early betting interest for arguably the most popular domestic competition in the world – the EPL.

While there will likely be more activity next month as opening day nears and transfer windows draw to a close, oddsmakers and bettors have selected early favorites for the 30th season of the Premier League. Here’s a preview of the action, with prices on all 20 competitors in 2022 Premier League odds and a history of prior champions:

The Favorite In 2022 Premier League Odds – Manchester City

Manchester City look to defend their Premier League title, the third won in four seasons and fifth in 10 since Sergio Aguero’s stoppage-time rocket ended decades of despair in 2012. After years of playing second fiddle to Man United, they’ve become top banana in the northern city.

This may be one of the strongest clubs top to bottom in any sport on Earth right now. Led by the tactician Pep Guardiola, Man City returns a star-studded lineup who spent the summer involved in major international competitions.

Raheem Sterling paced England’s offense in the Euro group stages. Along with Phil Foden and John Stones, they ALMOST brought it home in the final. Kevin De Brunye played through injury to get Belgium to the quarterfinals. Ederson and Gabriel De Jesus helped Brazil make the Copa America final. American goalie Zach Steffen helped the USA win the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League back in June.

Putting a team at a minus price in a league of 20 seems absurd. However, the dominance shown by Man City during the 2020-21 campaign gives the oddsmakers confidence they can continue their form.

With the summer window open through the end of August, there’s an opportunity to add more talent to this roster. While domestic glory was won, there’s some unfinished business with Europe and a Prem rival.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Man City have the second-most tickets with 19% on 8% handle. BetMGM players have them fourth in ticket count (13%) and handle (11.5%).

Bettors’ Choice To Knock Off The Favorite – Chelsea

BetMGM and DraftKings have seen the public pick one challenger to Man City as the betting favorite. Chelsea, who finished third last season but won the Champions League, have earned more than 38% of handle and 29% of tickets sold at BetMGM, while commanding 37% of handle and 26% of bets on DraftKings.

Like their northern rivals, the London side is loaded. Perhaps the most recognizable name is American winger Christian Pulisic. After struggling to break into Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI, “Amish Messi” dazzled in the Champions League knockout stages before delivering the winning PK in extra time against Mexico in the Nations League final. Midfielder Jorginho helped Italy win the Euros over England, which included teammate Mason Mount.

Chelsea’s more youthful group stands in contrast to the established names of Man City and others. N’Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta earned strong reviews for their Euro performances. As the Blues look to lift the first Premier League trophy since 2016-17, those younger names will be looked to for leadership and play beyond their years.

What About Liverpool?

Champions in 2019-20, Liverpool look to overcome an injury-riddled title defense and get back on top. The Reds needed a late charge to make the top four (including an amazing last-second goal by goalkeeper Alisson Becker converting a corner to earn a vital point), but return a star-studded lineup. Jurgen Klopp’s roster includes elite scorers like Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino.

While Virgil van Diyk and Xherdan Shaqiri starred for their countries in Euro 2020, the roster largely got the summer off. Yes, many of these names will run double duty for World Cup qualifying. Given the numbers of matches missed with injury last season, the recovery time was likely appreciated. If Liverpool can get early wins with the healthy group, that can set up for a thrilling battle throughout the season.

Both BetMGM and DraftKings players have made the coastal powerhouse second choice behind Chelsea. Liverpool have 24% handle and 14% of tickets at DK. BetMGM bettors have Liverpool at 15.5% of handle and 13.5% of total bets.

Biggest Questions in 2022 Premier League Odds

The summer transfer window has all but centered on the Prem’s top scorer, Harry Kane, and whether he’s on the outs with Tottenham. Some rumors have linked him to Man City or Chelsea, while others suggest he could earn a massive payday with Spain’s powerhouses. Geez, imagine Messi and Kane at Camp Nou.

Tottenham struggled last season and finished outside the top six. They’ll play in the inaugural Europa Conference League on Thursdays this fall. Of the major names in the Prem, they may have the most questions about their future. Despite tempting prices across the board, they’re not getting much play. On the BetMGM futures market, they have no takers.

If Kane stays in England, whoever gets him will see their prices drop. Man City would be -200 or shorter in that scenario. Chelsea would stay as second choice but they might drop below +300. This is a huge consideration for anyone looking to get in now before August 13th when Week 1 starts.
