Robinhood Age Requirement For 2026: Find Out The Minimum Age To Use Robinhood

Written By John Carlo Villaruel , Sports Expert for TheLines.com | Fact Checked by: Caleb Tallman

If you want to know the Robinhood age requirement for prediction markets, you’re in the right place. The answer is 18 but there's much more to it than just a birthday.

That "more to it" part is what makes this guide worth reading. Prediction markets on Robinhood don't work like a traditional sportsbook signup and the eligibility rules go beyond just your age. We're going to cover the full checklist, explain why the threshold sits at 18 instead of 21, and flag restrictions that can still block you.

How Robinhood ended up in the prediction markets space

Robinhood started life back in 2013 as a commission-free stock trading app, making its name by opening up investing for everyday users. Through the middle of the 2010’s the app grew quickly thanks to cutting the Robinhood fees and minimum balances traditional brokerages had always demanded, and the company hit a public Nasdaq listing in 2021.

From stocks to event contracts

On the prediction markets side at Robinhood, the move into event contracts is a fairly recent one only dating back to early 2025. We've been tracking the markets and the Robinhood sign up bonus since its launch, and it's now grown well past the initial fed funds rate contracts and college basketball tournament markets it started with. It now has markets in politics, sports, economics and crypto. To find the hub on the app today you’ll need to head into the Investing tab, which is the same section you'd visit for stocks or ETFs.

Pros and cons of Robinhood

Pros and cons
Pros and cons
  • 18+ age requirement is reasonable
  • Low per-contract fees at $0.01 commission
  • Backed by a registered futures commission merchant
  • Requires a separate Derivatives account approval

What is the Robinhood age requirement for prediction markets?

The 21+ rule that most online sites carry creates some of the confusion around prediction markets, but that’s not the case with Robinhood.

The baseline is 18 for all Robinhood accounts

The 18 year old minimum runs across all Robinhood individual investing accounts and Robinhood promo codes, and that account works as the foundation for everything else on the app, prediction markets included. No Robinhood product is available without first clearing that age minimum.

Prediction markets require a second layer of approval

Hitting the 18 minimum doesn't give you access to event contracts on its own though. There's a separate Robinhood Derivatives account doing the gating with its own approval running on top of the main investing account. Even if you have an investing account up and running and you’re over 18, the Derivatives application still needs clearing before event contracts show. We worked through it ourselves and the Derivatives application asked for trading background information that doesn't necessarily come up on the standard investing application, marking it as a clearly separate step.

Why the prediction market age is 18 and not 21

Robinhood prediction markets are structured as event contracts classified as financial derivatives, not traditional sports bets. The contracts get offered through Robinhood Derivatives, LLC which is a registered futures commission merchant and a member of the National Futures Association. Thanks to that regulatory structure the minimum age floor sits with financial account eligibility rules instead of state gambling laws.

Robinhood prediction markets are event contracts

Understanding the product itself and the Robinhood transfer bonus goes a long way toward explaining why the eligibility rules look the way they do.

How event contracts work

An event contract is essentially a financial derivative tied to an outcome in the real world, and most run as a Yes or No question. If you buy a Yes contract and the outcome happens, the contract settles at $1. If the outcome doesn't happen it settles at $0. Pricing on the contract moves before settlement as traders react to news, polling, injury reports and other developments.

What markets Robinhood currently has

Across the prediction markets hub on Robinhood, we've come across categories on sports, politics, culture, economics, crypto, climate, financials, tech and science and world events. Markets within each shift around constantly since event contracts attach themselves to live or upcoming outcomes. The hub itself went live in March 2025 with fed funds rate contracts and college basketball tournament events on the day-one menu.

The full Robinhood eligibility checklist

Age is the first step but the process has several more steps after that. Here's exactly what you need.

You must be 18 or older

Eighteen years old is the minimum. No exceptions on that and absolutely no workaround through other account types.

You need a valid SSN and a US residential address

Robinhood requires a valid Social Security Number specifically and a Taxpayer Identification Number won't work. Your address also needs to fall within the 50 US states, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands, and even within those areas there are additional location restrictions for specific event contract categories that we'll cover further down.

You need the right US status

For Robinhood, account eligibility comes down to US citizenship, US permanent residency, or a valid US visa. This rule applies on the standard investing account and on the Derivatives alike.

You need an approved individual account and then Derivatives approval

You need the standard individual investing account approved and active before you can even apply for Derivatives access because Robinhood Derivatives is the entity offering futures and event contracts. Without that second approval you can use Robinhood for stocks and ETFs but prediction markets won't be available to you.

RequirementDetails
Minimum age18 years old
SSNValid Social Security Number required (TIN not accepted)
Residential addressLegal address in 50 US states, Puerto Rico, or US Virgin Islands
US statusUS citizen, permanent resident, or valid US visa holder
Individual accountMust be approved before applying for Derivatives
Derivatives accountSeparate approval needed for event contracts

Does Robinhood verify your age?

Verification at Robinhood is usually completed with the broader account application, so the age check isn't really a separate part in the process. Documents you might be asked for include a driver's licence, state ID, passport photo, utility bill, bank statement, Social Security card, or permanent residency card. Whatever ID gets submitted, the legal name has to match what's on the account and additional documentation might be requested by Robinhood whenever something fails to line up.

How to sign up for Robinhood prediction markets

Once you've confirmed you meet all the eligibility requirements above, the signup process itself is fairly easy.

  1. Click one of the banners on this page to head to the Robinhood site

  2. Start the account application and enter your personal details including your legal name, date of birth, Social Security Number and US residential address

  3. Confirm your US status as a citizen, permanent resident or valid visa holder

  4. Submit any identity verification documents Robinhood requests, such as a driver's licence, passport or utility bill

  5. Wait for your individual investing account to be approved

  6. Once your investing account is live, apply for a Robinhood Derivatives account through the app

  7. Complete the Derivatives application and wait for approval

  8. After both accounts are approved, head to Investing and then Prediction Markets to start browsing event contracts

Your birthday is just the starting line

The Robinhood age requirement for prediction markets is 18+ and that part is simple enough. But age is just the first step in a multi-layer eligibility process that includes identity verification, residency requirements, a standard individual investing account, and Robinhood Derivatives approval. Meet all the requirements and you're ready to start trading event contracts.

If you’re old enough and meet the other requirements, sign up through the banners on this page and get trading today.
