NBA icon LeBron James has sent a shockwave through the prediction markets industry by announcing a partnership with Polymarket.

James quietly dropped an introductory video on his X account, showing him walk into Polymarket headquarters.

The cryptic 14-second X post simply read: “Welcome to Polymarket HQ. Coming soon. In partnership with @Polymarket.”

The post, which dropped at the start of the weekend, has racked up over 20 million views as at time of writing.

James Deal Times with NBA Season Start

There’s no accident in the timing of LeBron James’ Polymarket deal. The new NBA season starts in just over a month. It also times with LeBron’s new contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, who he joined two months ago.

There’s a possibility that a player of LeBron James’ stature could be more than just a marketing face for the prediction markets giant.

In February, two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo announced that he had become a Kalshi shareholder.

“We all on Kalshi now,” said Antetokounmpo, who revealed he would be involved in marketing and publicity.

LeBron James & Polymarket: What we Know

LeBron James has wasted no time in moving on from his DraftKings partner deal, which expired in June.

The move to Polymarket will reportedly focus on football marketing, though details are light right now. It also gives the NBA a headache, who are – like MLB – struggling with the legal implications of prediction markets while its big stars sign deals.

The basketball legend has said this will be his last season (his 24th). The four-time NBA champion and NBA Finals MVP is obviously preparing for a role outside playing. A potentially lucrative deal with Polymarket will go some way to achieving that.

Simultaneously at the weekend, the LeBron James Family Foundation took to X to announce a new partner deal with the PGA Tour.

The inaugural LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational takes plays in July next year.

Not LeBron’s First Gambling Rodeo

This isn’t the first time LeBron James has partnered with an established gambling/prediction markets (depending on your legal perspective) platform.

James had a marketing deal with DraftKings but that expired during the summer. That has freed James up to move swiftly into the Polymarket head office.

Under NBA rules, players can do certain deals with sports betting companies, though restrictions apply. Ownership, if this ultimately plays out, is restricted to under 1%. However, prediction markets are still officially classed as derivatives platforms under federal CFTC jurisdiction.

If this indeed turns out to be LeBron’s last season as a player, he would be free to take up a bigger role with Polymarket, rather than just a standard publicity gig.

Kalshi, Polymarket Increasing Sports Presence

The relationship between U.S. sports and prediction markets is gradually becoming closer.

Kalshi officially announced a tie-up with five MLB brands last month. That followed a March deal between Polymarket and MLB. Polymarket became Major League Baseball’s official prediction market exchange partner.

The deal, as seen in other U.S. sports, includes information-sharing. Polymarket and Kalshi also have information deals with the NHL.

Such agreements are vital to prediction markets as they aim to be more accurate – essential to serious traders on the platforms.

NBA Slow on the Prediction Market March

Unlike the MLB, which has a deep relationship with Kalshi and Polymarket, the NBA has been more cautious.

So far, the NBA has no partnerships in place. However, Kalshi and Polymarket have predictably been the frontrunners to sign. Smaller operators like Novig and Fanatics are also in talks.

There could still be pushback on LeBron’s decision to sign with Polymarket. Some fans have taken to social media to call for an NBA ban on the player.

Similar calls were made earlier this year when Giannis Antetokounmpo announced a deal with Kalshi. The Milwaukee Bucks star became a Kalshi shareholder while remaining an active basketball player.

Not all fans were on board with the move, however, taking to Antetokounmpo’s X account to vent their frustration. “Masterclass in image torching this year,” wrote one fan.
