The Boston Red Sox and Kalshi have apparently entered a marketing partnership in time for the weekend’s homestand games.

Posting a homestand preview schedule on its X feed, the Red Sox proudly led with the line: “presented by Kalshi”.

This was enough to send the Red Sox’s followers into a frenzy. It also raises questions about where it leaves the ball team with Massachusetts lawmakers who are keen to outlaw sports event contracts.

No Formal Announcement Leaves Questions

There was no official announcement about the deal from either the Red Sox or Kalshi before the three-game series against the San Francisco Giants.

However, that didn’t stop the Red Sox’s many thousands of fans speculating on what it meant.

Additionally, Kalshi sent an email to Red Sox fans encouraging fans to sign up. Interestingly, Kalshi promoted predictions on “inflation, interest rates, elections, and major world events,” but no sports in its marketing blurb.

For the record, the Boston Red Sox secured a clean sweep against the SFG, ending on Sunday with a 5-4 win.

Prediction Markets & Sports Franchises: Deals So Far

If Kalshi’s deal with the Red Sox is long-term, it marks yet another tie-up between one of the prediction market giants and a leading sports franchise.

Why Sports is Key to Kalshi Growth

Kalshi and Polymarket may have started as shares derivatives platforms, but they have openly branched out into sports contracts over the past year or so.

Billions of dollars was traded on the prediction markets during the recent FIFA World Cup. On Kalshi alone, over $1 billion was traded on the outright winner.

Kalshi added 3 million customers during the World Cup this year. Plus, it made deals this summer with both Genius Sports and Sportradar, two of the biggest sport data providers.

In an industry where data accuracy is key for traders, sports partnerships for prediction markets make sense.

Massachusetts Lawsuit Could Cause Issues

While it seems like the Red Sox and Kalshi are new bedfellows, it’s unclear what tack the Massachusetts courts will take.

Massachusetts vs. Kalshi has been a battle that’s been raging since last year.

The state filed a lawsuit against Kalshi in September, alleging illegal sports betting practises. It would follow Ohio, which in March classified prediction markets as sports betting in a landmark decision.

Retail and online sports betting went live in Massachusetts in 2023. Sportsbooks such as BetMGM and DraftKings are legal but taxed by the state.

However, Kalshi and Polymarket, which offer sports betting-style contracts, are federally regulated and effectively bypass state laws.

The sticking point is the introduction of event contracts that resemble traditional sports betting. In recent months, both Kalshi and Polymarket have increased their sports betting markets to include binary options that look like moneyline wagers, parlays, and player props.

Ultimately, the Supreme Court could make the ultimate decision on who regulates prediction markets. Further marketing deals like Kalshi/Red Sox may force the court’s hand even quicker.
