Preakness stakes odds: what led to mystik dan decision?
After Mystik Dan’s one-and-one-half-mile at Churchill Downs on Saturday, McPeek chose to have the three-year-old colt scoped and blood work taken to ensure he was in good health. The partnership of Lance Gasaway, 4 G Racing, Daniel Hamby III, and Valley View Farm, which all have a stake in Mystik Dan, then rubber-stamped Mystik Dan into the field.
During the horse’s two-year-old campaign, he endured a lung infection following his presiding maiden win. McPeek wanted to be certain that a similar issue couldn’t repeat itself.
“He felt great,” retired jockey Robby Albarado, who gallops Mystik Dan, noted. “I thought every day would be a progression for him, and it is. He’s coming back to himself. He’s starting to get back into that race mode right now.
“Today (Saturday) I let him stretch his legs a little bit down the lane. He was comfortable doing it, wanted to do it.”
Mystik Dan is expected to arrive at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on May 12. Albarado will follow suit on Sunday before riding him the next morning.
“We’re not changing any routine we do with any other horse any time,” McPeek said. “This is what we would have done whether it was a maiden race or stakes race.”
The Preakness’ post position draw will occur on Monday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m. ET, with morning-line odds accompanying it. Post time is set for 6:50 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 18. NBC will broadcast the 2024 Preakness Stakes.
Other Possible Preakness Horses
As of this publishing, Mystik Dan is among nine likely horses for Preakness Stakes odds. Muth and Imagination, two Bob Baffert-trained horses, lead the pack.
D. Wayne Lukas, a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, will showcase Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2) winner Seize the Grey and Just Steel, who trailed Muth by two lengths and finished ahead by four and one-fourth lengths of Mystik Dan in the Arkansas Derby.
Withers Stakes (G3) winner Uncle Heavy, Louisiana Derby (G2) third-place finisher Tuscan Gold, and Blue Grass Stakes (G1) fifth-place finisher Mugatu are also confirmed. Meanwhile, Louisiana Derby (G2) winner Catching Freedom and Federico Tesio Stakes winner Copper Tax are potential additions to the field.
