2024 Preakness Stakes Odds: Muth Leads Futures Pool No. 2

Ineligible for the Kentucky Derby, Bob Baffert-trained Muth opens as a 3-1 favorite in Preakness odds via Futures Pool No. 2. Saturday offers the most exciting two minutes in sports, but savvy bettors can get ahead of the curve by betting into this pari-mutual futures pool for the second leg of the Triple Crown.
The bets you place on this futures pool will fluctuate until it closes. After that, your odds will be fixed leading up to post time. Preakness futures for this second and final pool open on horse racing apps and sites Friday at 12:00 p.m. ET and close Saturday at 6:00 p.m. ET, less than an hour before the Kentucky Derby.

Below, you'll note 32 horses with Preakness futures odds. The minimum win bet is $2. Only 14 can run in the Preakness and only seven went off at post time last year.
The 2024 Preakness Stakes runs at approximately 6:50 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 18.
Kentucky Derby favorites Fierceness and Sierra Leone opened at 9-2 and 6-1, respectively. Imagination, another Baffert product, opened at 12-1.

The Risk and Reward of the Preakness Futures Pool
Betting into futures pools offers a serious potential advantage over waiting until race day. While odds fluctuate during the pool's open time – from Wednesday through Friday – the price you lock in come Friday is yours moving forward. Say you bet Epic Ride in this Preakness Futures pool at 50-1. Should Epic Ride pull off a massive upset in Kentucky Derby odds, those odds will plummet. While other bettors scramble to get a piece of Epic Ride 10-1 or worse, you still hold that 50-1 ticket.
However, a futures wager on the 2024 Preakness Stakes odds will not be refunded if the horse does not run in the Preakness! Futures pools often offer a high-risk, high-reward option for horse racing.

The Favorites
While Baffert sits out another Kentucky Derby for a doping scandal, his prized horse Muth will, too. But Pimlico Race Course doesn't hold the same ban on Baffert, and Muth is eligible for the race. He opens a 3-1 favorite in Futures Pool No. 2. Muth never failed to hit the board in six starts and never failed to finish worse than second. He has four victories, three of which came in graded stakes. Most recently, he won the Arkansas Derby (GI).
The next two – Fierceness (9-2) and Sierra Leone (6-1) – likely see their odds fluctuate massively in the next week. The two are favorites in the upcoming Kentucky Derby and their finishes in that race might swing their Preakness odds. A victory for either (over the other) would chop their odds and make the victor definitively favored over the other. A poor showing might drop their odds to 8-1 or worse.
But it's clear the Preakness currently is a three-horse race between Muth, Fierceness, and Sierra Leone.
Horses Whose Preakness Odds Might Change After the Kentucky Derby
A surprise longshot victory or a longshot hitting the board at Churchill Downs will vault their Preakness odds. Horses like Just a Touch (15-1), Dornoch (40-1), Honor Marie (40-1), and Epic Ride (50-1) are favorites among TheLines staff to possibly surprise Saturday. Hitting the board will be a massive swing in momentum for any of these four horses.
Conversely, shorter-priced Derby horses like Catching Freedom (15-1) and Forever Young (15-1) could see their Preakness futures turn to dust with a poor finish at the Derby.
