Who Is Frankie Dettori?

Detorri has been racing for nearly four decades. He finished No. 16 of 20 with 25-1 chance Society Man in the Kentucky Derby. He’s eyeing a better result in his first appearance in the Preakness Stakes. Dettori will team up with legendary trainer Bob Baffert and his three-year-old colt, Imagination. His odds are in the 5-1 range as of this publishing.

The partnership of SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Dianne Bashor, Robert Masterson, Waves Edge Capital LLC, Catherine Donovan, and Tom Ryan is behind the purchase of Imagination. His worth was $1,050,000 as a yearling at Keeneland in 2022. The Into Mischief colt showcases a record of 2-4-0 in six starts, earning $406,800 along the way.

Past Performances

Imagination finished second in the San Anita Derby on April 6, trailing Stronghold at the finish line. Dettori rode him to his near win while notching a first-place finish with six other horses that same day, including Nothing Like You in a 7 1/2-length victory at the $300,000, Grade II Santa Anita Oaks for three-year-old fillies.

Dettori was even the jockey for Imagination’s victory at the San Felipe (G2). Evidently, Baffert trusts the tandem to deliver another strong outing.

Moreover, Dettori has approximately a 21.8% winning percentage with three-year-old horses on turf.

Baffert is quite familiar with Pimlico in Baltimore. He owns a Preakness record of eight wins. Muth, the 2024 Arkansas Derby winner who is another of Baffert’s horses, will also compete in the Preakness. Imagination and Muth would normally have been eligible for the Kentucky Derby. However, Baffert is banned from Churchill Downs because Medina Spirit was disqualified from the 2021 Kentucky Derby after failing a post-race drug test.
