What Are Beyer Speed Figures?
Horse racing handicapper Andrew Beyer designed BSF in the early 1970s as a handicapping tool. The purpose was to quantify a horse’s speed in a given race to compare it with other horses. Win margin tells only half the story – was the field fast? Slow? BSF sorts through track length, field strength, and all other variables to create a tidy number that can be applied to future races.
Bettors can use these all-in-one numbers to help quantify a horse’s speed in an objective manner. Numbers near or over 100 are considered dominating, while mid-90s figures usually indicate a horse has what it takes for contention.

BSF Notes
Generally speaking, it will take a Beyer Speed Figure of at least 100 to win the Preakness Stakes. Last year’s winner, National Treasure, notched a 98, though it’s worth noting that came in just a seven-horse field.
Nobody has run a better race than Mystik Dan. The Kentucky Derby champion nosed the field with a 100+ performance, and it wasn’t his first triple-digit performance. The Kenny McPeek-trained colt had also posted 101 in the Southwest Stakes, giving a glimpse into his high ceiling. However, McPeek has already voiced concerns about a previous poor race on only two weeks of rest.
Muth, Imagination, Tuscan Gold, and Just Steel would appear to be the other serious contenders. All would need to make a jump to catch Mystik Dan. But all have shown the requisite speed to reach the aforementioned triple digits.
It’s worth noting that Muth and Imagination are both Baffert horses. He has had the most success in the history of the race with seven wins including three of the past nine.
