Preakness Stakes Betting: Will Mage Deliver Again?
If Mage wins consecutive races, the chestnut colt will have accomplished a somewhat rare feat. Only 36 horses have won Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Justify (2018) and American Pharoah (2015) were the last to do so. Both went on to notch a first-place finish at the Belmont Stakes three weeks later and, thus, captured the elusive Triple Crown.
California Chrome (2014) was the most recent horse to win the Derby and the Preakness without emerging with a Triple Crown. It was a 4-5 favorite to accomplish that feat.
This time, Mage is the lone horse in the Preakness Stakes who also raced in the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Disarm, who finished fourth at Churchill Downs, was the other remaining possibility. However, trainer Steve Asmussen decided otherwise.
The 2023 Preakness Stakes marks the first one since 1948 to involve a single Derby participant. That year, Citation won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness — en route to a Triple Crown.
As previously noted, Mage is favored to win among the Preakness betting field — priced at 8-5 on the morning-line odds board. That’s equivalent to an implied probability of 38.50%. Mage, ridden by veteran jockey Javier Castellano, drew the No. 3 position on the Baltimore racetrack. Castellano also rode Mage to the Derby victory on May 6.
This year, Pimlico Race Course’s main event will begin at approximately 6:47 p.m. EST on Saturday — broadcasted on NBC, NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, and Peacock.
