will Preakness odds feature Mystik dan?
While Mystik Dan’s status isn’t confirmed, he resumed training at Churchill Downs on early Thursday morning. Trainer Kenny McPeek will continue observing his conditioning before determining whether Mystik Dan will participate in the Preakness Stakes. The second jewel of horse racing’s Triple Crown will occur at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, May 18.
The three-year-old colt galloped approximately 1 3/8 miles with retired jockey Robby Albarado. This session followed a one-mile jog and gallop on Wednesday morning. McPeek stated that he’s likely to decide on Mystik Dan’s standing among Preakness Stakes odds early this weekend. Final entries for the Preakness are slated for Monday, May 13.
“We’re just following our normal training routine,” McPeek said. “That’s going to be the sign for me if we’ll run (him) in the Preakness. We won’t do anything special — just let him show us he’s back to his normal self going through our training routines.”
In other news, Thorpedo Anna, trained by McPeek and ridden by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., emerged unscathed from her win at Friday’s Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI). McPeek could see the three-year-old filly competing in this year’s Alabama (GI) at Saratoga. This one takes place on Saturday, Aug. 17.
“Personality-wise, Mystik Dan and Thorpedo Anna are two completely different horses,” McPeek voiced. “Mystik Dan has a very calm demeanor, while Thorpedo Anna is typically on the muscle and ready to go at all times. We’ll probably ship her up to Saratoga soon and could use the (June 7) Acorn (GI) as a prep for the Alabama.”
