Preakness 2022: Epicenter Horse Racing Profile

Epicenter

Epicenter is expected to be the favorite in the upcoming 2022 Preakness Stakes. He finished second in the Kentucky Derby and nearly won the roses, but we all know the story by now, finishing 3/4 of a length behind 80-1 shot Rich Strike.

The Word On Epicenter

May 1: “He’s a wonderful individual,” says Hall of Fame trainer Steven Asmussen in an April 10 media update. “He came in highly recommended and has always been impressive physically. He’s done well in his development and continues to improve as the races get longer.”

Epicenter completed his final major Derby prep Saturday, posting a 1:01 five-furlong time on a track described as “muddy.” Working with Alejandro, “Epicenter produced fractions of :12.60, :24.40, :36.20, :48.40 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.80,” according to Sunday’s presser.

May 3: Trainer Steve Asmussen: “It matches his favorite colors (referring to the Asmussen’s barn color and saddle towel color of blue). Like any race, you want to get away nicely from the gate and go from there. How long he stands in there, how long it takes to load, 150,000 people staring at him – it’s a lot. Joel is very confident in rhythm of the horse. So, if he is away cleanly Joel will let him be who he is.”

May 12: Only one Kentucky Derby runner-up was favored in the Preakness and won it (Prairie Bayou, 1993), per Marty McGee. While the betting odds may favor Epicenter in the Preakness, history is not on his side.
