Notable Horses

Recent Preakness winners have generally posted a Beyer Speed Figure of around 100 for the race. That would indicate a clear tier of three real contenders: Mage, National Treasure, and First Mission.

Mage will obviously enter as the headliner. Recent winners of the Kentucky Derby have not had a great run of it at the Preakness, aside from Triple Crown winners American Pharaoh (2015) and Justify (2018). Before that, however, nine horses doubled up on the first two legs between 1997 and 2014.

National Treasure has some solid results in Grade 1 stakes races with a place and a show in late 2022. However, he ran fourth in his most recent such effort despite going off as the second-favorite in the Santa Anita Derby.

First Mission does not have the top-flight experience of the other two, having only run a single Grade 3 stakes race. However, he did win that one at 1 1/16 (just a bit short of Preakness distance) against a field that included Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Disarm.

If Beyer Speed Figures are any judge, the rest of the field will have a tough time catching these top horses in the Preakness Stakes.
