While news that Kentucky Derby sensation Rich Strike will skip the Preakness Stakes surely tamping down some of the fervor over the big race, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to watch for — or bet on — this Saturday. We can use Preakness Beyer speed figures to help handicap this field.
As we did with the Derby, we’ll look over BSFs for every horse in 2022 Preakness odds. Which horses have run the strongest, and how did they run in their most recent races?

Obviously, the triple-digit scores for Epicenter stand out. Epicenter has run top two in his last six races and looked on his way to winning the Kentucky Derby before the late charge by Rich Strike. As one of the Derby favorites and the clear most talented horse in a much smaller field at the Preakness Stakes, it’s no surprise Epicenter rates as a strong favorite here.
Simplification posted a solid fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He has run well of late with a pair of 96s in two of his past three races. He figures to be a popular inclusion in exotics bets due to consistency.
The lone filly in the field, Secret Oath has a lot of experience running longer races and has run them mostly well. She struggled in the Arkansas Derby in a similar field to this one mostly due to positioning.
