He closed as an even money favorite, staving off a late two-horse push to claim his third-straight victory. He closed 14-1 in futures pools, fifth among the field, at the beginning of April. Unfortunately, two days before the Derby, he scratched from the field.

The Word On Practical Move
April 18: Practical Move improved his Beyer speed figure (BSF) in almost every race this year, topping out at 102 in the San Felipe in March.
April 22: Beginning last year, legendary trainer Bob Baffert was suspended two years by Churchill Downs and transferred some horses to trainer Tim Yakteen. That suspension continues in 2023 and more horses have been transferred to Yakteen; however, Practical Move was not one of those horses. Yakteen has trained this contender from the beginning and should get full credit for the colt’s growth.
April 30: “…breezed five furlongs in :59.60,” after arriving at Churchill Downs on Saturday.
May 1: Will run out of gate 10 and posted 10/1 morning line odds.
