Will Betting Trend Hold Serve?

So far in the 2025 NBA playoffs, teams coming off a loss have gone 20-10 against the spread (66.7%), the second-best cover rate over the previous 20 years. Will the Knicks continue this upsurge? After falling in Game 5, the market has bet them down from +2 to underdogs in a potential series-clinching tilt at Little Caesars Arena.

Although New York owns the series lead, I believe Detroit has been the better team. The Knicks’ wins in Games 3 and 4 came by three combined points. Jalen Brunson and Co. have trailed for multiple stretches in every contest.

Throughout this first-round clash, the Pistons have generated a +28.0 net rating in the third quarter — the best of any team during the playoffs. Couple that with late-game exits from Brunson (reaggravated right ankle injury) and Josh Hart in Game 5, and the Knicks failed to close things out and advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Come Game 6, Cade Cunningham and the rest of Detroit’s ball handlers should continue dissecting New York's defense with their pick-and-roll action. On Tuesday evening, they delivered 1.13 points per possession (PPP) via these sets. For reference, this season, the Knicks grade in the 27th percentile on a PPP basis against them.

To boot, the Pistons will likely shoot more efficiently than the 27.6% three-point clip they produced in Game 5. While the trend above indicates that New York will bounce back, I expect Detroit to force a Game 7. The betting market is in agreement.
