Gilbert and Solid Bullpen Help Stop the Bleeding

In Seattle’s last game, starter Logan Gilbert pitched six scoreless innings, and three relievers pitched one scoreless inning in the Mariners' 1-0 win over the New York Yankees, snapping their six-game losing streak. Weston Wilson hit a solo home run for the only run of the game.

Seattle ranks last in the Majors in runs scored and, in their last seven games, only averaged a paltry 1.6 runs per game.

2B Cole Young (.262, 14 home runs, 52 RBIs), who leads the M’s in at-bats and is tied for the team lead in RBIs, did not play yesterday with a head injury and is listed as day-to-day. Starting shortstop J.P. Crawford (.212, 10 home runs, 30 RBIs) is out on the 10-day IL.

Randy Arozarena (.276, 16 home runs, 52 RBI) leads the club in batting average and is tied for the lead in RBIs, and had two home runs and three RBIs in two games before the last one.

Starter for Seattle for Series Opener

George Kirby (8-9, 3.68 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) gets the nod for the Mariners, and they have lost two of his last three starts. For the most part, he has been pitching well, not giving up more than two runs in six of his last seven starts, including his last two. Seattle has won both of his starts facing Houston this season, where he gave up three runs in 12 2/3 innings. This season, he has logged 132 innings, striking out 112 and walking 28.

Astros Have Little Success Against the Mariners This Season

While the Astros are in first place in the AL West, they have lost seven of eight games facing the Mariners this season. This is their first series facing them in the second half.

In their last series, they were on the road and took two of three games from the San Francisco Giants. They won the series finale 2-1 despite only four hits, and Nelson Velazquez and Nick Allen had an RBI.

Houston ranks 25th in the Majors in team ERA, and, while ranking a respectable 10th in runs scored, has averaged only 2.6 runs over its last five games.

Yordan Alvarez (.322, 35 home runs, 87 RBIs) leads the Majors in batting average, ranks second in home runs, and third in RBIs, and while batting .300 in 12 games this month, he has not gone yard and has five RBIs. DraftKings Sportsbook has him as the major favorite to win the AL MVP at -1200.

Christian Walker (.236, 22 home runs, 67 RBIs) ranks second on the club in home runs and RBIs and is in a slump, going hitless in the last four games, and this month has no home runs and four RBIs.

2B Jose Altuve (.240, 13 home runs, 35 RBIs) missed the last game and is listed as day-to-day, and CF Brice Matthews (.197, 7 home runs, 22 RBIs) is out on the 10-day IL.

Starter for Houston for Series Opener

Peter Lambert (8-6, 3.09 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) goes for the Astros, and they had won three in a row with him on the hill, giving up two runs in each win before his last outing, when he gave up three runs in five innings in a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Astros lost their lone start against the Mariners this season back in May, giving up three runs in seven innings. This season, Lambert has 111 strikeouts and 44 walks in 113 2/3 innings.

Mariners vs. Astros Predictions

Mariners Moneyline DraftKings, +110

Neither team is getting it done at the dish lately, and even on the road, the Mariners have good value. Kirby has been pitching well and is expected to have a better outing, and the Mariners have won both of his starts against the Astros. Seattle has had Houston’s number this season, winning seven of eight games, and they will get the win in this AL West series opener.

Under 8 runs DraftKings, -115

This will be a low-scoring game, as both pitchers have been pitching well lately and both teams have struggled to score runs. Kirby has not given up more than two runs in six of his last seven starts, and Lambert gave up three runs in his last start and two runs in each of the three before that. The Mariners are only averaging 1.6 runs over their last seven games, and the Astros are only averaging 2.6 runs over the last five games. This series opener has a low-scoring affair written all over it, so take the Under here.
