sanderson farms Championship ODDS: FIELD AT A GLANCE

Hardly a surprise for a Fall Swing event immediately following the Presidents Cup, but the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship is sure to feature one of the weakest fields of the year. Nick Dunlap, fresh off of a multi-win rookie season, may very well be your betting favorite when odds release on Monday. He has rapidly ascended to No. 34 in the OWGR, and is the only top-50 ranked player in this week’s field.

2022 Sanderson Farms champion, Mackenzie Hughes will be the lone representative in the field from last week’s Presidents Cup. Rickie Fowler, Eric Cole, Ben Griffin, and Maverick McNealy are likely to represent the betting favorites for Sanderson Farms Championship odds this week.

Luke List inconceivably putted his way to victory at the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship, prevailing in five-way playoff over Scott Stallings, Ben Griffin, Henrik Norlander, and Ludvig Aberg. List has been quiet ever since, but will return to Mississippi for his title defense. Other past winners back in action this week include Hughes, Cameron Champ, Ryan Armour, Cody Gribble, and Peter Malnati.

INTRODUCTION TO cc of jackson

The Sanderson Farms Championship was established in 1986 and has been at the Country Club of Jackson in Jackson, Mississippi since 2013. In recent years, as the TOUR has pushed more of a wrap-around schedule, the quality of field has diminished compared to its early days.

Overall, like many other Fall Swing setups, CC of Jackson offers little resistance to the field and has often boiled down to a birdie fest, where players who excel putting on Bermuda greens and have above-average distance off the tee, have prevailed.

How It Breaks Down

The scorecard reads 7,462 yards for this par-72 at Country Club of Jackson, however the true distance plays much shorter, with players able to pull driver regularly here to cut off angles. This has helped open up the playing field to both long and short hitters off the tee, as regardless of length, most approach shots tend to find themselves in the 100-150 yard range.

Par-5 Scoring will be pivotal yet again this week, and with three out of four par-5s measuring over 580 yards, there’s an advantage to be had on these holes for players who possess the distance to reach in two. Seven of the par-4s measure under 450 yards, including the drivable 330-yard 15th hole, which plays as the second easiest scoring hole on the course.

Overall there is a fairly even split of ten holes with a scoring average under par, and eight holes which average over par. That is skewed in part by the lack of star-power in these Sanderson Farms fields, but in any case, the winning score has regularly lived in the -18 to -22 range.

COURSE HISTORY AND COURSE COMPS

It’s an eclectic cast of players who have found repeated success at CC of Jackson, primarily favoring veteran plodders. The top 10 in Course History include Cameron Champ, Garrick Higgo, Ben Griffin, Henrik Norlander, Nick Hardy, Mackenzie Hughes, CT Pan, Luke List, Aaron Baddeley, and Zach Johnson.

Course Comps

There are not many wide open, easy scoring venues on the PGA TOUR, which do not penalize inaccuracy off-the-tee and instead reward greens in regulation and skilled putting. In that regard, Silverado Resort, TPC Twin Cities, Detroit Golf Club, The Stadium Course, and TPC Southwind are the courses that stand out to me as the best examples of comp courses where players can gain on the field with their distance and putting. Cameron Champ, Luke List, and Mackenzie Hughes are examples of players who have taken this approach to win at both CC of Jackson and strong crossover results on these comp courses.

Combine performance across this list and the top-10 players in Comp Course History here are Daniel Berger, Keith Mitchell, Lucas Glover, Maverick McNealy, Mac Meissner, Dylan Wu, Eric Cole, Rico Hoey, Matt Kuchar, and JJ Spaun.

KEY STATS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BETTING PGA TOUR GOLF ODDS THIS WEEK

  • SG: APP
  • Birdies or Better Gained
  • Par 5 Scoring
  • Prox: 100-150
  • Driving Distance
  • P4: 400-450
  • SG: Putting (L36, Bermuda)
  • Course + Comp Course History

In the spirit of brevity for the fall swing, I’ll forego the usual deep dive per individual key stat category and dive straight into the ideal combo stats I’m eying for players best suited to attack The Country Club of Jackson. That optimal mix should include Birdies or Better Gained, Recent Form (SG: TOT L16), Driving Distance, Prox: 100-150, and SG: P (L36, Poa). Just seven players rank above average in each stat category: Maverick McNealy, Eric Cole, JJ Spaun, Jacob Bridgeman, Michael Kim, Seamus Power, and Nick Dunlap.

Correlations

Looking at the correlation charts this week for CC of Jackson, it’s Par-3 Scoring and Par-4: 450-500 which fall outside the top 10 in correlation compared to the TOUR average. SG: ARG also takes a notably steep dip in importance, furthering the narrative that this is a bona fide birdie-fest where players will need to separate with their irons and putting.

The stats that make the largest increase in importance at CC of Jackson include SG: Short Game and SG: OTT, considering the advantage bombers with spike putting have demonstrated over recent years.

Top-10 Correlated Stats with SG: TOT
Top-10 Correlated Stats with SG: TOT at CC of Jackson

There are 11 players in the field who rank above average in each of the above 10 key stat categories: JJ Spaun, Ben Griffin, Andrew Novak, Seamus Power, Eric Cole, Rico Hoey, Justin Lower, Henrik Norlander, Dylan Wu, and Roger Sloan.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT: Andrew Novak

With a third full season now under his belt, the 29-year-old has continued to demonstrate a steady upward trajectory with the overall state of his game. Over the course of the 2024 season, Novak established himself as a consistent ball-striker with spike putting upside, particularly on Bermuda greens – a credit to his Carolina upbringing. He placed top-20 in one-third of his 2024 starts, including four top-10s between the WM Phoenix Open, Mexico Open, Cognizant Classic, and John Deere Classic.

That record of success on easy, Bermuda-based layouts should give Novak some confidence to kick off the new 2024-2025 season, even if the results haven’t quite materialized yet over his first two trips to The Country Club of Jackson. There is plenty of volatility in these Fall Swing events, as many players kick off the rust from a sustained break through the FedEx Cup Playoffs. With a clean slate to begin his season, I believe Andrew Novak is poised to have his best year yet.

2024 sanderson farms CHAMPIONSHIP: PLAYER POOL AND MODEL RESULTS

With all the course-fit profiles in mind, I’m leaning early toward the below player pool. Naturally, I’m looking their way in the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship odds as well. I’ve broken the list down by projected pricing/odds tier for DraftKings and Underdog Fantasy golf drafts.

Model Breakdown

In my model, I’m emphasizing SG: APP, Comp Course History, Birdies or Better Gained, and Prox: 100-150, followed by a more balanced mix of Driving Distance, SG: P (L36, Bermuda), Par-5 Scoring, P4: 400-450, and SG: TOT (L16).

Model Favorites

You know it’s an ugly week of Fall Swing golf when J.J. Spaun tops the model without having to second guess it. Spaun is a California native with great splits on Bermuda courses, two starts removed from a T3 at the Wyndham Championship. He’s done his best work on comp, easy course set ups with top-10 finishes at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage as well over his last 10 starts. Spaun ranks No. 1 in SG: Approach and Par-4 Scoring: 400-450 yards, and is set up well to compete this week.

After Spaun, the rest of my model’s top 10 features Jhonattan Vegas, Keith Mitchell, Maverick McNealy, Chan Kim, Ben Griffin, Andrew Novak, Mac Meissner, Jacob Bridgeman, and Seamus Power.

When Sanderson Farms Championship odds open, I’ll be looking to construct a fairly long card, with longshots beyond 50-1 having proven to be viable in this tournament historically. As of now, I’m eying JJ Spaun, Ben Griffin, and Maverick McNealy as initial leans when the odds release on Monday. Check back in later this week for more updates, and best of luck navigating the PGA TOUR golf odds for the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship!
