Patriots vs. Eagles props

Rhamondre Stevenson Over Rushing Yards

In six of the Patriots’ last 10 games, New England tailback Rhamondre Stevenson hit the under on his rushing yardage prop. This level of inconsistency was a product of the Patriots’ unreliable game script. Relying on Stevenson to produce a respectable output on the ground required a steady presence at quarterback. As NFL bettors are aware, Mac Jones (and to a lesser extent Bailey Zappe) failed to provide that. Believe it or not, there may be enough reason to buy into a more positive outlook in Week 1.

Starters On The Injury Report

Eagles: None

Patriots:

  • LT Trent Brown (Illness)
  • LG Cole Strange (Knee)
  • RG Mike Onwenu (Ankle)
  • WR DeVante Parker (Knee)

Analysis: No players have been ruled out yet for Sunday’s tilt, yet it’s concerning that three of New England’s starters on the offensive line are somewhat hampered. Brown’s condition is worth monitoring, as the Pats already are unsure of their starting right tackle.

evaluation of patriots vs. Eagles odds

Before digging into edges on either side of the ball, let’s start on the surface. Despite the strong sentiment that Philadelphia is atop the NFC among NFL power rankings, there’s plenty to counter that with. In TheLines’ Eagles preview, we mentioned that five of the last eight Super Bowl losers went under their NFL win totals the next year.

More often than not, a team’s market rating is raised after exceeding expectations. Unsurprisingly, Philly is perched atop the board at . Although the Eagles could steer clear of negative regression, there’s evidence of this plausible outcome. It goes back to last season.

Jalen Hurts & Co. started 8-0 straight up and 6-2 ATS in 2022. Despite a 6-3 outright run to wrap up the campaign, they went 2-6-1 ATS during that stretch. The latter span indicates they were somewhat overvalued by the betting market.

Eagles offense vs. Patriots defense

Philly enters this season with a pair of fresh-faced coordinators, including first-time OC Brian Johnson. He served as Eagles quarterbacks coach since 2021, yet calling plays against an upper-echelon defense is a different ballgame.

With the duel-threat Hurts and a bevy of backs, Philly is set up to run the ball a bunch. They did so at the fourth-highest rate in 2022. Their pass rush subsequently carried the torch. While Bill Belichick has historically struggled to contain mobile QBs (re: Josh Allen on countless occasions), an offseason of prep time should pay dividends for the heralded longtime mastermind.

Couple that notion with a defense that surrendered the third-fewest EPA per dropback last year. The secondary even tacked on stud first-round corner Christian Gonzalez in the draft. We’ve already seen the total get bet down from an opener of 46, and a bevy of these variables serve as a reminder as to why. Then, there’s the aforementioned game script component.

patriots offense vs. Eagles defense

New England QB Mac Jones ended 2022 with the fifth-fewest EPA per dropback and success rate, respectively, among qualifying passers. After delivering 7.3 yards per pass attempt during his rookie season, he dipped to 6.8 Y/A in his sophomore campaign. That said, Belichick mindlessly trusted Matt Patricia and Joe Judge to coordinate the offense.

Bill O’Brien’s return to New England couldn’t come at a better time — albeit versus a talented secondary that let up the fourth-fewest Y/A.

On the other hand, Philly was a mixed bag against the run. The Eagles allowed 4.7 Y/A to running backs (No. 25) — with a 60.0% success rate (No. 22) on carries without nose tackle Jordan Davis. With Davis on the field, those figures shortened to 3.4 YPA and a 64.8% success rate. Last year’s first-round selection is listed behind fellow defensive lineman Jalen Carter, the No. 13 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, on the depth chart.

The Patriots boast an above-average offensive line on paper. However, the more well-rounded Riley Reiff is on temporary injured reserve (IR). If the aforestated Stevenson finds daylight on the ground, New England will keep Hurts and Philly’s offense on the sideline.

Final Thoughts

Laying over a field goal with the defending NFC champions may seem like a slam dunk. But when you consider that it’s a key number, this proposition gets dicier — especially if the home underdog dictates the pace. Good luck with your wagers on Patriots vs. Eagles odds.
