The 2024 Patriot League men’s basketball tournament tips off on Tuesday. The postseason event comprises 10 entrants, and the winner will earn the conference’s lone bid for March Madness odds. For diehard college basketball fans (and bettors), the Red Raiders are still paced by veterans Ryan Moffatt and Keegan Records. Those two, along with then-star guard Nelly Cummings, were up double digits on Arkansas in the first half of the 2021 NCAA Tournament before the Razorsbacks’ ball pressure took over.

Nevertheless, this version of Colgate’s offense isn’t as potent as recent seasons. For context, the Red Raiders’ offensive efficiency ranks below the Division I average (per Haslametrics). They’re also tallying the Patriot League’s third-lowest offensive rebounding percentage.

Therefore, they’re prone to an upset if they undergo an off-shooting night. That occurred in one of their two meetings against Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks fell in both games by a combined six points. Their defense is built to run opponents off the 3-point line, surrendering the fewest perimeter shots per game in conference play.

If Lehigh junior guard Tyler Whitney-Sidney has success attacking the paint over a three-game span, the Mountain Hawks are as capable as any team of defeating Colgate. Sitting on the opposite side of the bracket helps, too. Yet, their +700 odds aren’t ultra-appealing.

Unlike Atlantic Sun tournament odds, there is no reseeding in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Colgate, Lafayette, Boston University, American, Bucknell, and Lehigh all have first-round byes.

However, this theoretical advantage won’t benefit teams nearly as much as programs playing three straight wins en route to winning the league tournament title. After the quarterfinals, the remaining four teams have a pair of days to recover before suiting up again on Sunday.
