Tournament Notes

Per the odds table above, the best available price on UCLA is . That’s good for a 41.67% implied probability. However, the Bruins’ hopes took a major hit, as Bruins coach Mick Cronin announced that Jaylen Clark, the 2022-23 Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, will miss the rest of the season.

Clark initially suffered the injury against Arizona on Saturday. He represents one of the premier ballhawks across D-I, manufacturing the ninth-highest individual steal rate. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound also helps lead the way for UCLA’s second-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom).

Even though Arizona () could certainly win two straight league tournaments, Clark’s absence may make taking a longshot more worthwhile.

Enter Washington State (). Similar to West Virginia, the Cougars rank No. 317 in KenPom’s “luck” factor. This category showcases the deviation in winning percentage, regarding their actual record and their expected record. It incorporates the correlated gaussian method. Wazzu’s eight losses by two possessions or less assuredly plays a role.

The Cougars are a very high-variance team, driven by a methodical tempo, top-10 perimeter scoring rate, and sizable lineup to rebound proficiently and presumably dictate the tempo. Avoiding the Arizona pod is also beneficial. Washington State’s below-average defense in league play is a concern, though.
