While not quite as prohibitive a favorite as in women’s 3M diving, China stands way above its competitors here also. They’ve won three straight world championships. It would be a shock if they didn’t make it four straight major competition wins.
Great Britain won gold in Tokyo, and one competitor from that team, Tom Daley, returns. He helped lead Great Britain to silver at the 2024 World Championships, with Ukraine rounding out the podium.

We covered this on Saturday’s post, but note that qualifying may cause the Olympic gymnastics odds to shift around. Frederick Richard will try to lead a Team USA squad that enters as a fringe contender after missing out on a medal in Tokyo.

Neither Thomas Ceccon nor Ryan Murphy competed at the 2024 World Championships in the 100M backstroke, but both have held the world record, with Ceccon being the current all-time champ. They’re expected to duel for top honors, but they’re hardly prohibitive favorites. Murphy took bronze in Tokyo behind two Russian competitors barred from these games due to international sanctions.
It was another American, Hunter Armstrong, scooping gold at the World Championships, albeit with a time a half second shy of what even Murphy posted for bronze in Tokyo. Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez and Greece’s Apostolos Christou rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively.
Armstrong was also a half second slower than Murphy at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

One of the budding superstars of international swimming, Summer McIntosh, figures prominently here. A 17-year-old Canadian, McIntosh didn’t participate in the February World Championships for this event but must have chuckled when she saw the results. Freya Colbert took gold there, but her time lagged by a whopping 12 seconds compared to McIntosh’s world record. Everyone else in this event looks to have their work cut out for them.

A pair of Aussies pace the odds board here, and each has a relevant bona fide backing her up. Mollie O’Callaghan has the world record from her 2023 World Championship. For her part, Ariarne Titmus, who finished second in that event, won gold in Tokyo. She established an Olympic record in the process. They’ll make for a formidable pair.
Neither participated in this event at the February World Championships. Siobhan Haughey — Tokyo silver medalist — won gold there. She clocked a time about two seconds shy of O’Callaghan’s mark.
