The College World Series championship is on the horizon, with the Oklahoma Sooners and North Carolina Tar Heels rising to the final stage in Omaha.

It’ll be a best-of-three series between two teams that have a lot to play for.

Oklahoma hasn’t won a national championship in baseball since 1994. North Carolina has never won one in program history, despite reaching this stage in 2006 and 2007 and losing both times. Now, both programs have a chance to get over the hump and stamp their names in school history.

That’s what makes this matchup so compelling.

No matter who wins, this year’s College World Series champion won’t be one of the usual suspects. It’ll either be a program winning it all for the first time ever or a program ending a title drought of more than 30 years.

That should make this final feel fresh.

There’s no defending champion. There’s no overwhelming powerhouse. It’s the Sooners and the Tar Heels, two programs with different histories but the same opportunity sitting in front of them.

North Carolina reached the championship series with a 12-7 win over West Virginia, while Oklahoma punched its ticket by beating Georgia 11-4. Both teams have earned their way to this point, and now the entire college baseball season comes down to one final series.

The format only adds to the drama. This isn’t a single-game fluke situation. It’s a best-of-three championship series, which gives both teams a real chance to adjust, respond and prove they’re the better team.

There will be win-or-go-home pressure. There will be future MLB talent across both rosters. And there will be one of the best atmospheres in the country, because Omaha at this time of year always delivers.

Starting this weekend, it should be must-watch TV as the college baseball season comes to a close.
