Buckeyes vs. Nittany Lions Game Preview

On Jan. 5, the Buckeyes were less than a minute away from an 11-3 start to the campaign. Couple that with losing center Zed Key (shoulder sprain) after just four minutes of action, and Chris Holtmann’s team had to feel in good shape.

Not only did Ohio State fail to hold on against Purdue, but it’s also lost 13 of its last 14 games in the process. The roster has seemingly quit on Holtmann, who’s failed to help the program advance past the first weekend of the Big Dance amid his six-year stay in Columbus.

On the surface, the Buckeyes boast the 28th-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency in the country. This metric exhibits the amount of points a team would tally per 100 possessions versus the average D-I opponent. However, their rating drops to No. 125 during this poor stretch.

While they’re still led by Brice Sensabaugh, an explosive scorer freshman (16.5 ppg), Penn State’s own offense should be up to the task. The Nittany Lions showcase a top-20 unit at that end of the floor, averaging 1.25 PPP during their two-game winning streak.

They’re guided by do-it-all point guard Jalen Pickett, who is one of three players in Division I or the NBA to have over 70+ points, 15+ assists, 10+ rebounds, 65.0%+ field goal percentage, and a 90.0+ free-throw percentage in a two-game span over the last 25 years (via STATS). The other two? LeBron James (Nov. 2017) and Steph Curry (Nov. 2022).

Micah Shrewsberry’s bunch will aim to improve its NCAA tournament hopes as well. PSU is currently on the outskirts of a potential at-large berth — behind programs like New Mexico and Utah State.
