Buckeyes vs. Spartans Game Preview

On Jan. 5, the Buckeyes were less than a minute away from an 11-3 start to the 2022-23 campaign. Couple that with losing Zed Key (shoulder sprain) after just four minutes of action, and Chris Holtmann’s team had to feel in good shape.

Not only did Ohio State fail to hold on against Purdue, but it’s also lost 14 of its last 15 games in the process. However, Holtmann’s unit, which posses a bottom-20 minutes continuity across D-I, has refined its cohesion of late. It’s prompted consecutive wins over Illinois and Maryland — two clear-cut 2023 NCAA Tournament teams.

With 128 different possible combinations for Big Ten tournament seeding, as of Saturday morning, there’s plenty up for grabs for Michigan State. For now, it’s most likely projected for a No. 8 or 9 seed.

But the Buckeyes are eyeing revenge after the Spartans delivered a 21-point drumming on Feb. 12. In that one, Ohio State mustered an abysmal 0.71 PPP. Although Tom Izzo’s crew boasts the 33rd-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom), it was more so a product of the Buckeyes’ inimical offense.

This time around, OSU may still be undervalued in the betting market despite hitting its stride of late. Mind you, MSU’s defense is less reliable while aiming to slow down an opponent’s fast-break opportunity. It owns the fifth-worst ShotQuality transition defense to boot.

Moreover, Buckeyes freshman Brice Sensabaugh & Co. have seemingly turned a corner offensively because they’ve tallied more uptempo possessions. They’ve done so by showcasing a resurgence on the defensive glass, as they out-rebounded the Fighting Illini and Terrapins, respectively. If the 6-foot-9 Felix Okpara, a fellow frosh, continues to ascend in that department, OSU will reap the benefits at the other end.
