Buckeyes vs. Boilermakers Game Preview

On Jan. 5, the Buckeyes were less than a minute away from an 11-3 start to the campaign. Factor in losing center Zed Key (shoulder sprain) after just four minutes of action, and Chris Holtmann’s team had to feel in good shape.

Not only did Ohio State fail to hold on against Purdue, but it’s also lost 12 of its last 13 games in the process. The roster has seemingly quit on Holtmann, who’s failed to help the program advance past the first weekend of the Big Dance amid his six-year stay in Columbus.

On the surface, the Buckeyes boast the 25th-ranked adjusted offensive efficiency in the country. This metric exhibits the amount of points a team would tally per 100 possessions versus the average D-I opponent. However, that rating drops to No. 111 during this poor stretch.

Although they’re led by an explosive scorer freshman in Brice Sensabaugh, Purdue’s defense should be up to the task. The Boilermakers showcase a top-25 unit at that end of the floor. They’ll be motivated to rebound from their own recent struggles, too, dropping three of their last four games.

Moreover, Matt Painter’s bunch is led by 7-foot-4 Zach Edey, the odds on favorite to win the Wooden Award (). Very few opponents provide a center who can hamper Edey’s proficiency at the rim, and Ohio State is no exception.

Most bigs wouldn’t flinch at delivering an 18-point, 8-of-16 shooting performance. But, as we previously noted, Edey is usually one of college basketball’s most efficient scorers. He should bounce back from his “average” outing at Maryland on Thursday, in which there were a handful of questionable no-calls against the Terrapins’ frontcourt pieces.
