Tod Kowalczyk’s bunch owns a slight edge on Kent St. in the MAC standings because of its 13-2 conference record. The Rockets are led by Rayj Dennis, one of the premier points guards across D-I. Toledo earned a nine-point win over Buffalo on Jan. 20, a part of its current 12-game winning streak. Moreover, that’s good for the third-longest run in college hoops.
Kent St. Golden Flashes
The Golden Flashes fell to the ascending Ball State Cardinals on Tuesday evening. Their top-35 adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom) had an off-night, yielding 1.24 PPP. But Kent St. is likely the most formidable threat (among these three teams) to make any sort of NCAA tournament noise, assuming it wins the MAC tournament, thanks to a pair of backcourt ballhawks in Malik Jacobs and Sincere Carry. On top of that, the 6-foot-1 Carry is due for a bit more all-around recognition than Dennis, primarily because of his defensive prowess.
Akron Zips
After blowing out Kent St. in last season’s MAC tournament championship game, John Groce’s five-out attack has regressed a tad with both Ali Ali (Butler) and Bryan Trimble, Jr. (Missouri State) transferring in the offseason. With that said, senior guard Xavier Castaneda has seen his scoring proficiency rise in the process, averaging 21.4 points per contest. Akron’s failure to play a hyper-competitive game with Toledo, getting swept in their regular season series, doesn’t bode well for its MAC tournament aspirations.
