Buckeyes vs. Spartans Game Preview

Ohio State’s 2023 Big Ten Tournament odds opened at +6600 — a product of a stretch with 14 losses in 15 games. But the 13-seeded Buckeyes have righted the ship of late, winning four of their last five matchups. Their latest one came against Iowa in the second round of the tournament, racking up 1.16 PPP against the league’s fifth-worst defense in Big Ten play.

Chris Holtmann’s team will square off Michigan State for the second time since Saturday. The Spartans swept OSU in their regular season series, but the Buckeyes managed to squeak out a backdoor cover (+6.5) in their most recent affair. Unlike the first matchup, Holtmann’s defense was the issue at the Breslin Center, with the Spartans shooting 12-of-20 (60.0%) from behind the arc.

Michigan State boasts the third-highest 3-point clip (40.3%) nationally, yet it showcases the eighth-worst shot selection across D-I (per ShotQuality). The Spartans don’t attempt a high volume of perimeter looks, either. What does that tell you? The Spartans possess their fair share of contested shotmakers, led by two-guard Tyson Walker (42.9%). Although OSU is vulnerable against off-the-dribble 3s, we’ll see if MSU undergoes any sort of negative shooting variance in that regard.

Meanwhile, Tom Izzo’s bunch has struggled mightily defending motion offenses all season, which is Holtmann’s bread and butter. That was on full display in East Lansing, as the Buckeyes tallied 1.20 PPP. If Buckeyes freshmen Brice Sensabaugh and Bruce Thornton continue to play with poise on the big stage, this meeting has the chance to deliver another high-scoring affair. But keep in mind, OSU will play its third game over a three-day span. Therefore, dead legs may come into play.
