Buckeyes vs. Hawkeyes Game Preview

Ohio State’s 2023 Big Ten Tournament odds opened at +6600 — a product of a stretch with 14 losses in 15 games. But the 13-seeded Buckeyes have righted the ship of late, winning three of their last four matchups. Their latest one came against Wisconsin in the first round of the league tournament, allowing 0.89 PPP to a sluggish (to say the least) Badgers offense.

Chris Holtmann’s bunch will square off against No. 5 seed Iowa for a third time in 2023. They split their regular season series, with the Hawkeyes racking up a 17-point victory in Iowa City on Feb. 16. However, this version of the Buckeyes exhibits more cohesion — and confidence.

Even with stud freshman Brice Sensabaugh tallying just nine points in the opening round, OSU still generated a crisp 1.02 PPP. West Virginia transfer Sean McNeil represented OSU’s main ingredient, as the 3-point marksman racked up a team-high 17 points.

McNeil is shooting a blistering 52.9% from deep over his last four games, which unsurprisingly coincides with his team’s resurgence. His presence will be critical factor versus Iowa. Not only do the Hawkeyes showcase the 168th-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom) nationally, yet they also struggle predominantly against motion offenses. It’s Holtmann’s bread and butter.

If Ohio State isn’t worn down from playing a second game in a 24-hour span, it should give Fran McCaffrey’s team fits. Whichever team emerges victorious will play No. 4 seed Michigan State on Friday. The Bucks need to reel off four more wins in order to advance to the Big Dance.
