Ohio Sports Betting News: Expected By Jan. 1, 2023

Let’s start with the good news. HB 29, a sports betting bill, was signed by both chambers of the Ohio Legislature in December 2021 and Gov. Mike DeWine in December 2022. Ohio online sports betting will commence at the very beginning of next year — at the latest.

But could it come sooner? Sen. Niraj Antani noted that he’s predicting Ohio sports betting to be established closer to the World Series. Fellow Sen. Kirk Schuring projected it to begin in the mid-to-late fall.

If it doesn’t launch come NFL season, Ohio would miss out of plenty of revenue. Per PlayOhio, the state could generate as much as $130 million per week via NFL betting alone. That means roughly $700,000 in tax revenue each week.

According to Legal Sports Report, the Casino Control Commission will declare an official start date on June 1. Ohio sports betting applications are next on the agenda.

The CCC announced earlier in May that applications will begin on June 15, and the deadline is July 15. These establishments are highlighted by the state’s biggest potential sports betting locations, including pro sports venues and already-established casinos. There are still glossed-over steps during that timeframe, though.

“Much attention has been focused on the status of the Commission’s rules pertaining to sports gaming and the announcement of application windows, as if these were the last steps in the process,” Jessica Franks, the director of communications for the CCC, said. “However, this does not fully consider the sheer volume of applicants or the unique and multi-faceted statutory requirements that must be met by both the operators and the Commission prior to the commencement of sports gaming.”
