How are USFL games different from the NFL?

Here is a rundown of the USFL game rules for the 2023 season.

Scoring

After a team scores a touchdown, they can go for 1, 2 or 3 points. Here is how it works:

  • Extra point: The ball is snapped from the 15-yard line and if the kick goes through the uprights it will be worth one point.
  • 2-point conversion: A team must reach the end zone from the 2-yard line.
  • 3-point play: Similar to scoring two points, but the 10-yard line serves as the line of scrimmage.

Instant replay

Each coach is allowed one replay challenge per game. All replay decisions will be made from the USFL Replay Command located at Fox Sports Control Center in Los Angeles. Additionally, this crew has the authority to overrule incorrect personal foul calls such as roughing the passer, facemasks and more.

Pass interference

If the football fails to cross the line of scrimmage, there will be no offensive pass interference or ineligible player downfield penalties. On defensive pass interference calls, if the defender intentionally tackles a receiver beyond 15 yards, it becomes a spot foul. Same rule applies if the penalty occurs 15 yards or less from the line of scrimmage.

Timing: Officials will start the clock following an incomplete pass for the first and third quarters as well as outside of five minutes in the second and fourth quarters. Also, when the game is inside of two minutes in the second and fourth quarters, there will be a clock stoppage following a penalty or first down.

Forward passes

Offenses have the option of throwing two forward passes as long as the ball is behind the line of scrimmage. The ineligible receiver rule would apply to the second forward pass.

Kickoffs

The USFL has moved the kickoff spot back to the 20-yard line as a way to increase returns and generate more fan excitement. This is a slight change from the 2022 season when kickoffs took place from the 25-yard line.

Onside kicks

USFL teams will have two options for maintaining possession following a scoring drive. One is the traditional onside kick from the 20-yard line. The other does not exist in NFL games. The “4th and 12” play is when the team elects to convert a first down from their own 33-yard line.

Overtime

If the game remains tied after four quarters, a best of three-play shootout is used to determine the winner. The teams will alternate possessions from the 2-yard line with each successful scoring attempt worth two points. Once both offenses have the ball three times, the team with the most points is declared the winner. However, if the score is still tied, the game moves into a sudden death format.

How can I watch and stream USFL games?

Fox Sports and NBC Sports share a broadcast partnership deal with the USFL. All 40 regular season games and three playoff games will be shown live nationally. The TV deal is split between the networks and the Peacock streaming service. This will include 13 primetime games that will be shown on NBC, Fox or FS1. Here is how the 2023 season will be broken down:

  • Fox, 18 games
  • FS1, 7 games
  • NBC and Peacock, 11 games
  • USA and Peacock, 7 games
  • All NBC games can be streamed live on the NBC Sports app.
  • The Fox Sports app will live stream all Fox and FS1 games.
