Ole Miss is a favorite over Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl. This game boasts a over/under– one of the highest marks on the board. With a higher point total comes higher variance. Just 11% of bowl confidence pools selected Texas Tech to win and, with that higher variance, the Red Raiders are a strong contrarian pick this season.
Ole Miss rides a three-game losing streak heading into this game while Texas Tech won each of their last three games. However, Tech is without star defensive lineman Tyree Wilson, who suffered a season-ending injury and is off to the NFL.
Texas Tech struggled to nail down a quarterback this season, with three different players combining for about 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns (but also 17 interceptions). Instead, they relied on an effective run game that ranks 19th in success rate behind Tahj Brooks and SaRodorick Thompson. The Rebels are most vulnerable through the air and against more physical teams.
Though the point spread moved just a half-point in favor of Texas Tech, that move to +3 is significant. Roughly 17% of college football games end in a three-point differential, known as the “push rate.” A half-point move on or off three points represents the largest shift in expected win rate in all of football.
Ole Miss bettors should be patient to see if that number drops to -2.5 while Texas Tech bettors should pull on +3.5 instead of +3

Last year, LSU had just hired Brian Kelly and was dealing with major roster turnover in the wake of the dismissal of Ed Orgeron. The Tigers had just 38 eligible players for the game– including zero rostered QBs– and had to use a receiver at QB. Deuce Vaughn and Kansas State easily rolled to a 42-20 victory behind four total touchdowns from Vaughn.
The Wildcats initially opened as a 1.5-point favorite, but that spread grew to -9.5 ahead of kickoff in response to opt outs and injury news. With 62 combined points, over 47 easily cleared.
Previous Years
Kansas State was the first favorite in some time to cover the points in the Texas Bowl. Previously, four straight underdogs cashed and three of those underdogs won outright. Favorites and underdogs are split evenly 7-7-1 since 2006. Underdogs won outright in five of those seven covers. Overs and unders alternated covers in each of the last five games, but unders are 9-6 since 2006.
