Track & Field

Betting Odds And Strategy

1

The umbrella of “track & field” covers a diverse scope of events, ranging from the 100m dash and javelin to the marathon and shot put. It also produces some of the most well-known Olympians, namely Jamaica’s Usain Bolt – who drew a viewership of 35 million in his 2016 100m dash victory. There’s no doubt that the sprints will draw some of the most attention in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in 2021, a series of events that the US should be fairly competitive.

With such a wide range of events, track & field will provide some of the most plentiful betting opportunities at legal US sportsbooks. This page will keep you up-to-date on Olympic track & field odds leading up to and during the Tokyo Olympics.

Women’s track & field

The largest track team in US history will be participating in Tokyo with over 130 athletes (women and men combined). Americans are well represented atop odds boards as Gabby Thomas is favored in the women’s 200m and Sydney McLaughlin is the most likely to bring home gold in the women’s 400m.

Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah are at the top of the boards for the women’s 100m.

Men’s track & field

A name to keep an eye on is Noah Lyles, who’s posted a personal best of 9.68 seconds in the 100m dash; he’s also the reigning 200m champion. The U.S. has not won a men’s marathon gold medal since 1972 (Frank Shorter), though Galen Rupp took bronze in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Another men’s US track star to watch is Erriyon Knighton, a 17-year-old from Tampa.

How to bet on track & field in the Olympics

One of the most popular and perhaps the most straight-forward way to bet on Olympic track & field is by betting on the moneyline. Bettors who choose this method simply decide who will be the outright winner of the event they’re betting on. This could range from a country’s medal to an individual’s placement.

For example, betting Erriyon Knighton in the 200m may offer +500 odds for a Knighton victory. If a bettor lays down $10 on Knighton and he wins, the bettor would win $50 plus their initial $10 bet back for a total payout of $60. Betting runners with “plus money” (like Knighton, indicted by the + ahead of a figure) offer a more advantageous payout opposed to those who are favored (indicated by a “minus” before their figure).

Other ways to bet on the Olympic games will include individual medal counts and country-by-country medal counts.
