The Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl– yes, really– is scheduled to kick off on Dec. 29 at 2:00 p.m. ET during the 2022-23 College Football Bowl Season. The game is held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, making it one of four bowl stadiums to be the primary home of an MLB team, in this case the Yankees. The Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-4) play the Syracuse Orange (7-5) in this year’s matchup. Below, we’ll look at Pinstripe Bowl odds and bowl history.

Minnesota is a favorite over Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl. Syracuse notably is a local team in this one and the point total is set at a conservative . The line opened at Minnesota -6.5 and, even though it’s only a one-point departure from opening, the spread moved through a key figure, -7. That represents a 14% shift in implied win probability, second-highest among any number.
Syracuse has lost five of their last six games, with their sole win coming over Boston College, after starting 6-0. Further, offensive coordinator Robert Anae was hired away by NC State while defensive coordinator Tony White is off to Nebraska.
In the biggest blow to the team, star back Sean Tucker opted out of the game for the NFL Draft.
On the other side, PJ Fleck is 3-0 ATS in bowls with Minnesota. The Golden Gophers have won four of their last five bowls and is an example of a team that always gets up for their postseason play. However, keep an eye out for who the starting QB will be for them. Tanner Morgan missed most of the back half of the season with injury and backup Athan Kaliakmanis played in his place.
Under Kaliakmanis, Minnesota went 3-2, using their QB minimally. Instead, the offense leaned into Mohammed Ibrahim, who carried the ball the third-most times in the nation at 304. In one more game without Morgan, Ibrahim recorded 200 (67%) of his season carries– a major uptick in usage.
Syracuse is 119th in rushing success rate this season, opening the door for 30 or more Ibrahim carries. Conversely, Minnesota is 10th in overall defensive success rate and, with an interim play caller, Syracuse may struggle to move the ball.
Notable Opt Outs
Minnesota: SAF Michael Dixon, LB Braelen Oliver
Syracuse: RB Sean Tucker, DL Steve Linton
Pinstripe Bowl betting
Last year, Maryland thoroughly beat Virginia Tech 54-10 as four-point favorites. The Hokies had fired their head coach and had a swath of opt-outs, making this one of the least surprising results of the 2021-22 Bowl Season. Taulia Tagovailoa completed 20 of 24 passes for two touchdowns and the Terps rushed in three touchdowns as a team. Defense and special teams for Maryland each notched a score of their own.
Maryland nearly covered the 55-point over/under themselves in the game and the over cleared.
Previous Years
Maryland was the second straight favorite to cover (both being -4 favorites, Michigan State 2019). Overall, underdogs lead the series 7-4, with three of those favorite covers coming in the last four iterations. Between 2011-16, six straight underdogs covered with five of them winning outright.
The Pinstripe Bowl has been between mid-level Power Five teams, leading recently to opt outs, teams playing with coaching vacancies, and overall “participation trophy” feel from at least one of the teams. This leads to a high rate of outright upsets.
Unders are 6-5 all-time in the bowl game.
