NBA In-Season Tournament Odds

A frequent complaint of fans of daily sports such as the NBA is that the regular season can sometimes want for significance due to its length.

The NBA has taken a big step toward rectifying that perception beginning with the upcoming 2023-24 season, in the form of the NBA Cup. The first-of-its-kind in-season tournament will include all 30 teams at inception and ultimately culminate in a championship game that will determine the NBA Cup winner.

NBA Cup games will be interspersed throughout a multi-week period early in the NBA’s 2023-24 regular season, and each result will count toward a team’s regular-season record.

The one exception will be Championship Game, which will essentially serve as an extra game the two participating teams will play that will not be factored in to their regular-season record.

Earlier in the offseason, the 30 NBA teams were randomly drawn into groups of five within their conferences based on last season’s won-loss records.

The NBA Cup field will eventually be whittled down to eight teams via Group Play games on Tournament Nights, which will take place from Nov. 3 through Nov. 28. Group Play will consist of four games for each team against the other clubs in its group, with two of those contests at home and two on the road.

The teams with the best Group Play record from each of the six groups will advance to the Knockout Round, along with one “wild card” team from each conference, defined as the second-place team with the best record.

The Knockout Round will consist of single-elimination quarterfinal and semifinal games that will determine the two clubs that will play in the NBA Cup Championship Game.

The following are some additional pertinent details surrounding the first annual NBA Cup, including the tournament format:

Dates: Tuesday, Nov. 3 – Saturday, Dec. 9 (championship game)

Group Play Nights: Tuesdays and Fridays between Nov. 3 and Nov. 28

Stages: Group Play, Knockout Rounds, Championship Game
