Southern Miss is a favorite against Rice in the LendingTree Bowl. In college football, 14% of games end in a seven-point differential, which is referred to as the “push rate.” Even a half-point move on or off -7 represents a major shift in implied win probability.
Southern Miss is one of the closes schools to their bowl site, with Hattiesburg sitting just 90 minutes away from Mobile.
At 5-7, Rice lucked into a bowl after Appalachian State, Army, and James Madison were deemed bowl in-eligible. The Owls finished 114th in points per drive allowed and just 73rd in points per drive scored. Over their last seven games of the season, Rice failed to record a win over a team ranked higher than 107th in the SP+ rating system.
On the other side, Southern Miss won six games and landed in a bowl after going 3-9 in 2021. Offensively, this is much of the same from the three-win team, though. They rank 111th in points scored per drive and the passing offense is nonexistent. Frank Gore Jr. continues to be the primary engine that drives the offense, recording 207 carries this season for just seven touchdowns.
Rice is 112th in rush yards per attempt allowed (4.9), including 6.4 yards per carry over their last three games. At , the market expects this game to be run-heavy and low scoring from a pair of uninspiring offenses.

LendingTree Bowl betting
Last year’s LendingTree Bowl was one of the most lopsided of the Bowl Season. Malik Willis and the Liberty Flames routed the Eastern Michigan Eagles 56-20 behind five total TDs from Willis (three passing, two rushing). Liberty was an 8.5-point favorite (-120), but easily covered that spread. The over, set at 58.5 points, was nearly covered by Liberty themselves.
Liberty was among the most popular Bowl Confidence picks in both spread and outright.
Previous Years
In 2020, Georgia State covered a three-point spread, beating Western Kentucky 39-21. But before then, underdogs had covered in five straight games and in eight of the last ten– including five outright upsets. The run was needed, as underdogs failed to cover in nine straight years from 2001-09. Overall, favorites are 12-10-1 in the LendingTree Bowl.
Overs are 12-11 in the history of the bowl game, including 2-0 in each of the last two outings.
