San Diego State is a favorite on Christmas Eve against Middle Tennessee in the Hawaii Bowl. The Aztecs opened as just 1.5-point favorites. The spread quickly moved in their direction despite no major opt outs or personnel changes.

SDSU has the shortest flight to Hawaii of any FBS team aside from Hawaii itself. According to coach Brady Hoke, the Hawaii Bowl was the Aztecs’ “preferred” bowl destination. The team will arrive on the island six days prior to kickoff for ample time to adjust. While they’ve been a strong defensive team for the past few seasons, the offense showed up for their last two wins, scoring 43 against San Jose State and 34 against New Mexico, both top defenses in the Mountain West.

The Aztecs also have a leg up because they play at Hawaii every other season thanks to sharing a division with the Rainbow Warriors.

Middle Tennessee on the other hand has a rough commute from near Nashville to Hawaii. The majority of their public backing likely comes from their high-profile upset of Miami (FL) from earlier in the season. Outside that game, the Blue Raiders have one win over a top-100 team per aggregate power ratings (SP+, FPI, Sagarin, etc.) and no wins inside the top 90.

SDSU deserves to be a high confidence pick, publicly favored so they are. Strong line movement coupled with a travel advantage and high expected win rate makes them a must-pick inside your top 10 in bowl confidence pools.

Hawaii Bowl betting

The Hawaii Bowl hasn’t been played in two seasons due to COVID-related cancellations. The last edition of the game was played in 2019 at Aloha Stadium, where the hometown Hawaii Rainbow Warriors beat Zach Wilson and the BYU Cougars 38-34. BYU was a 2.5-point favorite in this game and the over/under was set at 65 points, meaning the underdog and over both cashed in this one.

This game began to turn the world onto Wilson, who would eventually be drafted second overall by the Jets in 2021.

Previous Years

Underdogs have cashed in three of the last four Hawaii Bowls, all of which won outright. Hawaii was two of those outright upsets and has played in three of the last four Hawaii Bowls (exception: 2017 between Fresno State and Houston). With each underdog victory also came the over, which has also cashed in three of the last four bowls.

Underdogs are no stranger to cashing, holding a 12-5 advantage in these games, including a six year run between 2007-12. Of those 12 covers, nine were outright upsets. Overs and unders are split evenly 9-9 in Hawaii Bowl history.
