Wisconsin is a favorite over Oklahoma State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. 17% of college football games end in a three-point differential, known as the “push rate.” That means a half-point move in either direction represents a massive shift in implied win probability.
Every year, one bowl game features an unreasonable amount of opt outs. This year, the Guaranteed Rate Bowl is that game.
For Wisconsin, starting QB Graham Mertz, All American LB Nick Herbig, and three other starters are out. The Badgers will be coached by interim Jim Leonhard for one more game, but new head coach Luke Fickell was involved in the game planning.
On the other side, QB Spencer Sanders, top linebacker Mason Cobb, defensive end Trace Ford, and two more starters won’t play for Oklahoma State. Mike Gundy is 11-5 all time against the spread in bowl games and has the third-largest bowl coaching experience advantage (16 years). In Sanders place is potentially Gunnar Gundy– Mike’s son– who led the offense nowhere in sporadic starts this year.
The QB position is much more important to the Pokes’ system than to Wisconsin’s. Sanders’ absence nearly cripples Oklahoma State’s offense.
Wisconsin is an excellent contrarian pick in bowl confidence pools for two reasons. First, they’re picked in only about 27% of entries despite having a 60% expected win rate. Second, this game has a conservative over/under, making it a low-variance outcome.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl betting
In the first-ever Guaranteed Rate Bowl (previously the Cheez-It Bowl and Cactus Bowl), Minnesota defeated West Virginia 18-6. Despite being an indoor facility in the desert, it poured rain before kickoff, thoroughly soaking the field and creating issues offensively for two defensive-focused teams. The Golden Gophers were 6.5-point favorites and covered the spread in the after-dark bowl.
Despite having a conservative 45-point over/under, the under easily cleared.
Previous Years
Favorites have covered the last four iterations of this bowl game while unders have hit in five straight games. Before the most recent rebrand, this used to be a bowl involving the Pac-12, which they went 0-4 in their last four outings.
