What is the TGL?

TGL, or TMRW Golf League, is a new golf league by TMRW Sports, founded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Mike McCarley. TGL is described as “An innovative golf league in partnership with the PGA TOUR, fusing advanced tech and live action in prime time.”

The season will include a total of 24 players with four players assigned to each of the six teams. Each TGL match will feature three players competing for each team in a modern match-play format in a two-hour team golf competition, offering a fresh approach to the sport with a focus on technology, innovation, and fan engagement.

Modern Match Play Format Explained

TGL labels the league’s competitive format as “Modern Match Play.” It features a 15-hole format that includes 9 holes of Triples (3 vs. 3 alternate shot) and 6 holes of Singles, or head-to-head play.

Two teams made up of three players each will tee off at SoFi Center and start with Triples, then concluding the match by playing Singles. Each hole is worth 1 point and the team with the fewest shots on a hole wins the point. The team with the most points at the end of the night wins the match.

TGL Season Explained

TGL will use a points -based system for regular season matches. For each match, teams can be awarded up to 2 points for a win, 1 point for an Overtime loss, and no points for a loss in regulation.

After the regular season, the top four teams from the regular season will advance to the playoffs, which will include single-elimination semifinals and a “best-of-three” Championship Series.

Introducing SoFi Center

The SoFi Center is a brand new purpose-built venue at Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

SoFi Center is a nearly 250,000-square-foot venue that will fit close to 2,000 fans on match nights during TGL’s season. Inside the venue will be a giant simulator screen powered by Full Swing technology measuring 64 feet high by 46 feet across, roughly 20 times the size of a standard simulator screen. Alongside the simulator inside the venue will be a dynamic short-game complex that includes three sand bunkers and three individual 15 feet x 27 feet Virtual Greens within a massive 3,800 square-foot putting surface.

The short-game complex will be approximately the size of four basketball courts, while the entire playing surface inside the venue will be roughly the size of a football field. The venue will be covered by an air-supported dome that reaches a height of 75 feet and outside the venue will be two plazas to host pre-match festivities for fans.

Other Unique TGL Features

Tee Shots and Approach: Players will hit from tee boxes with real grass, fairway, rough, and sand on tee shots and approach shots into a 64 x 46 foot screen powered by Full Swing technology.

Short-game and putting: For shots within approximately 50 yards or less, depending on green setup and hole locations, the players will transition from Screenplay to Greenplay to a custom-built complex referred to as the “Green Zone” that will feature the largest-ever adaptable putting surface built by Full Swing. The 3,800 square-foot tech-infused green includes three 15 x 27 foot Virtual Greens by Full Swing, each with 189 actuators and jacks that change the slope of the green, creating a variety of play on every hole.

Shot Clock: Each player will have 40 seconds to hit their shot, or their team will receive a shot clock violation and a one-stroke penalty.

Timeouts: Four timeouts are available to each team to use in a match but only two timeouts can be used per session

Referees: TGL will have a ref to keep an eye on the action. TGL’s rules will be rooted in the traditional rules of golf played on the PGA TOUR, as well as inherent local rules needed for the league’s unique competition format, technology, and venue.

TGL TV Schedule

The inaugural TGL event will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. It will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+.

TGL reached an exclusive media rights deal with ESPN, with all matches airing at 9pm EST on ESPN or ESPN2. Matches will also be available to stream on ESPN+. After the first three weeks of action on Tuesday nights, TGL will transition to a permanent slot of Monday nights in primetime on ESPN and ESPN2, filling in ESPN’s Monday Night Football space once the NFL regular season has concluded.

TGL players and teams

There are 24 TGL players in total. The league features six teams and four players per team. Following Jon Rahm’s late decision to drop out of the TGL due to scheduling commitment concerns, there is currently one vacant spot in the league to be determined at a later date.

How to bet on the TGL

TGL, has announced a comprehensive partnership with U.S. Integrity (“USI”), joining other prominent sports leagues such as the NFL, MLB, NBA, and PGA TOUR. This partnership will serve as the basis for TGL’s golf betting program, as education and protection of integrity are at the forefront this new league’s development. This is an encouraging partnership from a bettor’s perspective, as TGL will presumably lean into betting offerings.

TGL odds are not expected to be posted across legal sportsbooks until all team rosters have been finalized. It is speculated that Futures markets to win the TGL season will be offered, along with weekly matchup and live betting opportunities.

Given the TGL’s exclusive U.S. media rights deal with ESPN, it is fair to speculate that ESPN Bet will offer expansive betting opportunities, though ESPN Bet is not reported to be the exclusive sportsbook operator carrying TGL odds.
