Memphis is a comfortable favorite over Utah State in the First Responder Bowl. However, that’s a number that’s come down significantly from its -10.5 opening mark. The movement stalled out as it approached and ultimately hit seven points– a significant move.

Leading Utah State rusher Calvin Tyler Jr. originally opted out of the bowl and declared for the NFL Draft, but he WILL play Tuesday. Tyler rushed for over 1,000 yards in his fifth season, following up an 800-yard campaign. The Aggies’ leading rusher behind Tyler is QB Cooper Legas. Backup running back Robert Briggs is not expected to play with an injury and neither is rushing QB Logan Bonner. The backfield for Utah State is strapped for depth.

While Memphis’ pass defense isn’t terrific (115th in EPA), Utah State’s passing offense is nearly nonexistent. They’re 96th in passing success rate and 107th in pass rate. The combination of a banged-up backfield and a struggling passing offense, Utah State is going to struggle to score.

Memphis bettors would be wise to jump on -7 while Utah State bettors are best to look for live opportunities since the value out of their number is long gone.

First Responder Bowl betting

Last year, Air Force took down Louisville with a 31-28 victory. The Falcons were slight one-point favorites in the game and the over/under was set at 55 points, meaning the favorite and over both covered. Air Force adhered to their traditional triple-option attack, but QB Haaziq Daniels completed 9 of 10 passes for 252 yards (25.2-yard average!) and two touchdowns. Louisville’s Malik Cunningham was kept largely in check, passing for only one touchdown but rushing for another.

Previous Years

Each of the last four seasons saw a different betting outcome for this game. As mentioned, a favorite covered in 2021; in 2020, underdog UTSA (+14) covered, in 2019 the game was a push, and in 2018 bets were voided due to the game being cancelled. Favorites have covered seven times in 11 played games, including five straight times from 2011-15.

Point totals have a dead even split at 5-5-1 in this bowl game.
