College Football Bowl Season

The Camellia Bowl is scheduled to kick off on Dec. 27 at noon ET during the 2022-23 College Football Bowl Season. The game is held at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., making it one of just a handful of bowl-specific stadiums used anymore. This year, the Georgia Southern Eagles (6-6) play the Buffalo Bulls (6-6) and has been played on Christmas Day for the past few seasons (this year, of course, being an exception). Below, we’ll look at Camellia Bowl odds and bowl history.

Georgia Southern is a favorite over Buffalo in the Camellia Bowl. That’s slightly down from a -4.5 opening mark, but movement seemed to stall out as the spread reached a key figure, -3. Roughly 17% of all college football games end in a three-point differential, known as the “push rate.” -3 has the highest push rate of any number in football, so even a half-point on or off that number represents a massive swing in implied win rate.

Both teams struggle mightily on early downs, with bottom-20 marks on early down success rate from both teams. Further, Buffalo is dealing with injuries to their top two backs, both of which sat out the regular season finale. Two of their top receiving options– receiver Jamari Gassett and tight end Trevor Borland– also hit the transfer portal.

Buffalo also needed a come-from-behind victory over 127th-ranked, one-win Akron on Dec. 2 to secure their spot in a bowl game.

QB Kyle Vantrease plays his former team in Buffalo, but Vantrease was in the bottom-third of QBs in EPA this season. As a sixth-year senior, he threw for almost 4,000 yards and 25 TDs, but also tossed 15 interceptions.

Georgia Southern continues to field a solid rushing offense. They finished 21st in success rate on the season, led by Jalen White (162-915-10).

Notable Opt Outs

Buffalo: WR Jamari Gassett, SAF Keshawn Cobb

Georgia Southern: None

Camellia Bowl betting

Georgia State was a six-point favorite over Ball State in the 2021 Camellia Bowl. The Panthers rushed for 359 yards and picked up 7.5 yards per play in a dominant 51-20 win over the Cardinals, who managed just 4.5 yards per play themselves. With 71 combined points, over 53.5 points hit, with Georgia State nearly covering that mark themselves.

At halftime, the game appeared to be a good one, with the Panthers holding a 20-13 advantage. But a 28-point avalanche in the third quarter put the game far out of reach.

Previous Years

Favorites and underdogs have split the Camellia Bowl evenly with four covers apiece. The Sun Belt has won four of the games outright, but are 2-2 against the spread. Overs have a 5-3 advantage in the bowl game.

Below are historical results of the Camellia Bowl.

The first Camellia Bowl was played in 1948 between Hardin-Simmons and Wichita State in Lafayette, La. That season, both teams played in multiple bowl games, with Hardin-Simmons (now Division-III) playing in three. The bowl game was revived as an annual contest in 1961, where it was played in Sacramento, Calif., until 1980. The current iteration of the Camellia Bowl began in 2014.
