Toledo is a favorite in the Boca Raton Bowl against Liberty, a departure from opening at -1.5. The market movement likely came in response to Liberty’s coach Hugh Freeze being hired away by Auburn and their subsequent performance against New Mexico State.

Gauging effort in bowl games is tough, but a critical component to handicapping games. Against the Aggies, Liberty had completely phoned it in. A trip to tropical Boca Raton may not be the best place to try and correct team focus. With that said, pretty much all season-long stats and trends with the Flames is out the window.

What should be focused on more when considering this game is the strong movement in favor of the Rockets and, importantly, when the buyback begins.

Quarterback Dequan Finn battled injury down the back stretch of the season, but played in the MAC Championship Game. In a vacuum, his matchup against the Liberty defensive line would be of concern, especially if he’s not playing at 100%. However, Flames DL coach Jeremy Garrett is on his way to Auburn with Freeze.

Watch the weather as the forecast calls for rain during the game.

This Bowl Season, Liberty is a full-on fade. Transfers, coaching moves, and questionable motivation mar this team from competition.

Notable Opt Outs

Liberty: LB Ahmad Walker, DL Dre Butler

Toledo: None

Last year, Bailey Zappe and upstart Western Kentucky were favored by just a point over Appalachian State, who had never lost a bowl game. Behind Noah Whittington’s career-day on the ground (7-150-1), the Hilltoppers easily covered the spread and won the game 59-38. It was the highest-scoring Boca Raton Bowl even in a bowl that’s seen historically-high scoring. The 97 combined points easily went over the point total, which was set at 68.5 points.

Zappe threw for 422 yards six touchdowns in the game, breaking all-time FBS records with 62 passing touchdowns and 5,977 yards in the process.

Previous Years

Favorites have covered in six of eight matchups and this has been a historically-lopsided bowl game. Only once has the game ended inside 20 points (2015, Toledo beat Temple 32-17). Both underdogs to cover the spread also won the game outright, being Toledo (+2.5) in 2015 and FAU (+7) in 2019.

Overs have cashed in three of the last four years and four times in seven total games. The under that interrupted the last four-game stretch was BYU vs. UCF in 2020, which had a total set at an incredible 80 points. The Boca Raton Bowl has also seen a 78.5-point total and has only had two games with over/unders set under 63.5 points.
