Last year, South Alabama (-17) obliterated Eastern Michigan, 59-10, in one of the most lopsided bowls in recent memory. Thanks to 69 combined points, a fourth consecutive Over hit in this bowl game.
Prior to that, Southern Miss (-6.5) beat Rice then named the LendingTree Bowl. Frank Gore Jr. ran for a bowl-record 329 yards and two touchdowns in the 38-24 victory. The 62 combined points went over the game’s 45.5-point total. In 2021, Liberty covered as an 8.5-point favorite and nearly covered the 58.5-point total on their own.
In 2020, Georgia State covered a three-point spread, beating Western Kentucky 39-21. But before then, underdogs had covered in five straight games and in eight of the last ten – including five outright upsets. The run was needed, as underdogs failed to cover in nine straight years from 2001-09. Overall, favorites are 14-10-1 in the 68 Ventures Bowl.
