Northern Trust Odds: FedExCup Playoffs Begin At TPC Boston

Northern Trust Open odds TPC Boston

The first playoff event in the 2020 FedEx Cup is the Northern Trust. The event at TPC Boston will feature the top 125 players in the FedExCup points standings, and the top-70 finishers will advance to next week’s event at Olympia Fields in Illinois for the BMW Championship.

TPC Boston did not hold the Northern Trust Open last year. The FedExCup was reduced from four events to three and TPC Boston now alternates every year with Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City to host the event. Patrick Reed was the winner last year and his odds were 50/1 at the start of the event.

The last time a FedExCup event was held at TPC Boston was in 2018 for the Dell Technologies Championship. Bryson DeChambeau (-16) was the winner and two strokes better than runner-up Justin Rose. Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama finished top-5 and Dustin Johnson tied for seventh. DeChambeau won at odds of 80/1.

Tiger Woods finished T24 that year and he returns to playoff action this week. However, Woods is still not showing top form in limited action since June. Recall too that Tiger finished outside the top-60 in proximity to the hole on approach shots at this course in 2018.

Finau and Johnson had double-digit top-10 finishes in the 2018 season, and Finau has now had six top-10 finishes this year including a recent T4 at the PGA Championship. The affable 30-year-old Finau now has 31 top-10 finishes since his lone PGA Tour win in 2016.

The FedExCup playoff format changed last year. Instead of a points reset used in the previous format, the new format for East Lake involves a strokes-based bonus system called FedExCup Starting Strokes. Each player will start with a score (relative to par) corresponding to his position in FedExCup points after the BMW Championship.

The No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup standings will start the Tour Championship at 10-under par. That was Justin Thomas last year and he held on to win. The player in second will be 8-under and third starts at 7-under.

As you watch and wager on players of interest, know that the bonus money increases for each event a player advances. Waiting for the FedExCup winner is $15 million with a total pool of $70 million over three events.

Northern Trust Open odds

No surprises at the top of the betting boards this week. Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm are the favorites, followed by Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day and Xander Schauffele. Defending champ Patrick Reed opened at around +3000.

Key stats

The course caters to longer hitters, and the list of winners and those on the leaderboard support the big bomb theory. Same with quality ball strikers, which over the last 36 rounds would point you towards:

  • Collin Morikawa
  • Bryson DeChambeau
  • Justin Thomas
  • Rory McIlroy

The next group in the betting market at TPC Boston who rank highly in the top-15 ball striking stats include Rahm, Schauffele, Cantlay, Matsuyama, Hovland and Casey a little further down the odds board but off a T2 at the PGA Championship.

DeChambeau (1), McIlroy (3) and Morikawa (9) also rank top-10 in SG: Off-the-Tee stats if you’re looking to support the big bombers who are excelling off the tee since the restart. Schauffele, Casey, Hovland and Dustin Johnson also rank top-15 along with young gun longshots Cameron Champ and Scottie Scheffler.

Strokes Gained: Approach is always a top stat profile to focus on and rates stronger than Off-the-Tee stats. Thomas and Morikawa top the list on approach stats, and it’s no coincidence they have won recently and are playing the best golf entering the FedExCup playoffs. Casey, Matsuyama, Hovland, Berger, Woodland, Simpson and even Woods are also in the top-15 in approach stats.
