The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin with The Northern Trust, and the top-125 golfers in the FedEx Cup Standings will tee it up at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, NJ. That means big names at the top of the Northern Trust odds boards.

The $9.5 million purse awards $1.7 million to the winner, and the top-70 golfers in the FedEx Cup Standings at the conclusion of four rounds advance to next week’s BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD.

The top-30 players in the FedExCup Standings will play in the Tour Championship Sept. 2-5 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta with a chance at the $15 million top prize.

Patrick Reed won the 2019 Northern Trust at Liberty National by one shot, and his odds to win were 50/1 at the start of the event. Dustin Johnson won last year’s Northern Trust at TPC Boston by 11 shots on his way to capturing the Tour Championship.

Located south of Jersey City and with stunning views across to Manhattan, Liberty National is located along the banks of the Hudson River offering constant views of the New York Skyline and Statue of Liberty.

Designer Bob Cupp and former PGA pro Tom Kite first began working on the course in 1992. Liberty National was also the host course for the 2017 Presidents Cup won by the U.S. team.

The golf course has produced a winning score of -16 when Patrick Reed won The Northern Trust event in 2019. Previously in 2009 and 2013 when it was known as The Barclays and held at Liberty National, the winning scores were 9 and 11-under-par. Adam Scott won a thrilling Sunday battle in 2013 with Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland T2 and Phil Mickelson another shot back and T6.

Liberty National seems to especially favor those who can cope with a series of mid-iron approaches to greens which are heavily undulating and smaller than Tour average at less than 5,000 square feet.

Key Stats

Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking and Approach will be stats to add to your bag, and Collin Morikawa leads in all three categories over his last 24 rounds.

Golfers than rank in the top 15 in at least two of those categories over their last 24 rounds include:

  • Collin Morikawa
  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Hideki Matsuyama
  • Paul Casey
  • Joh Rahm

  • Abraham Ancer
  • Rory McIlroy
  • Daniel Berger
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Kyle Stanley
  • Johnattan Vegas

With the five toughest Par-4s all at least 460 yards and the long 250-yard Par-3 at No. 11 also among the toughest scoring holes on the course, Par-4 efficiency and longer iron play is noted as well.

Par-4 efficiency leaders from 450-500 yards over their last 24 rounds include:

  • Rory McIlroy
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Abraham Ancer
  • Brendan Todd
  • Jon Rahm

Other notables among the leaders include: Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas.

Golfers To Watch

Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth just signed a partnership agreement with FanDuel Sportsbook. Will he be wearing FanDuel gear during the big money FedExCup Playoffs? Spieth is one of the favorites at The Northern Trust, and his stats suggest a strong performance this week. Spieth has gained strokes Tee-to-Green in 15 straight events, and his Around the Green, Short Game and Putting is still ranking among the best on the TOUR. He’s finished top 20 in five straight events with a pair of runner-up finishes adding to his strong current form. Jordan Spieth is top 12 on the TOUR this season in scoring and birdies, and the new FanDuel rep finished 6th at this course and event in 2019.

Sungjae Im

The South Korean’s putting was putrid last week. Otherwise, he easily finishes top five or makes the six-man playoff instead of T24 and four shots back. Still, Im was strong on approach gaining 4.7 strokes, and he’s usually a consistent enough putter. His tee-to-green game remains solid having gained strokes in six of his last seven PGA Tour events including a whopping 8.6 strokes gained on the field last week. Should he continue that groove, Im will be a challenger at long odds in the big bucks playoffs.

Russell Henley

If you plug in the strokes gained stats at FantasyNational.com, you’ll see Henley is No. 1 over his last 36 rounds on Approach and Tee-to-Green. His odds have drifted again after last week’s 72nd hole three-putt meltdown that cost him a spot in the playoff after leading nearly the entire tournament. Henley has really been in a groove recently and his ball striking is also top-4. The 32-year-old is being discounted some for his lack of strong results in this event including at this course in 2019. But will strong current form and stats that matter, he should continue his solid play and a fifth straight top-20 finish in U.S. events makes him a challenger and solid odds are available for top finishing position result as well.
