New York struggled last season and finished in the basement of the Metropolitan Division in 2025-26. Boston finished fourth in the Atlantic Division and made the postseason in 2025-26. Their season came to an end with a six-game loss in the first round to the Buffalo Sabres. The Rangers have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the teams. That includes a 4-3 overtime win at home in the most recent matchup on January 26, 2026.

Last season was a tough one for the Rangers. They finished the season 34-39-9 for 77 points. That left them in the basement of the Metropolitan Division and tied for the third-worst record in the league.
Boston went 47-29-6 to finish with 100 points in the 2025-26 season. The Bruins finished fourth in the Atlantic Division and earned a wild card spot. They were downed in six games by the Sabres in the opening round of the playoffs.

This game is practically a coin flip at the sportsbooks with Boston going off as a slight favorite. That’s probably due to the fact that the Bruins are the home team in this contest. We saw the Rangers struggle mightily last season and it may take time for all the new pieces to jell together for the Blueshirts. The Bruins own a 53.49% implied probability to win this contest.

With this being the season opener, there’s a lot of uncertainty as to what to expect from both squads here. The Rangers made some major moves in the offseason, dealing Vincent Trocheck to Utah in exchange for Sean Durzi and prospect Cole Beaudoin.
New York dealt two first round picks and a third-round selection to Vegas for Pavel Dorofeyev. In addition, they signed him to a seven-year extension. They added Marcus Pettersson from Vancouver while Joonas Korpisalo was acquired from Boston to be the backup goaltender.
The Rangers finished the 2025-26 campaign just 23rd in the league in goals per game with 2.87 per contest. New York finished 15th in goals against by allowing 3.04 goals per game last year. The Rangers were good with the man advantage, ranking fifth in the league by converting 24.7% of their opportunities with the man advantage. Meanwhile, they were 15th in the league in penalty killing. The Rangers successfully navigated 79.9% of their shorthanded situations.

The Bruins will look a fair amount like the same team that we saw last season. Their biggest move was acquiring JJ Peterka from Utah in exchange for first round picks in 2026 and 2028. After trading Korpisalo to the Rangers, Michael DiPietro opens the season as the #2 goaltender behind Jeremy Swayman.
Boston added Will Borgen to their blueline group. He’ll be a welcome addition, especially since Charlie McAvoy is suspended the first six games for a slashing incident that took place in the postseason series loss to Buffalo.
Boston was a good offensive team last season. The Bruins finished the year tied for 10th in goals per game by averaging 3.27 goals per contest. Boston was 14th in goals allowed by giving up an average of 3.01 goals per game in 2025-26. The Bruins were ninth in the league with the man advantage as they converted 23.4% of their power play opportunities. Boston struggled in the penalty killing department, finishing 24th as they successfully navigated 76.9% of their shorthanded situations.
Meanwhile, Jeremy Swayman (31-18-4, 2.71 GAA, .908 save percentage, two shutouts in 55 appearances, 54 starts) is the expected starter between the pipes for Boston.
Rangers vs. Bruins Prediction: Under 5.5 (+105)
We saw the Rangers struggle to light the lamp last season. Meanwhile, both teams were middle of the road in terms of goals against in 2025-26. With that said, both goaltenders are above average starters between the pipes. New York made some big changes but we have to see how those moves come together for them. Dorofeyev had a big year for the Golden Knights last year, especially in the postseason. I’m not convinced that he’ll get off to a hot start. On the flip side, Boston is pretty much status quo and they’re content to grind out games. I see this as a 3-1 or 3-2 type of game so I’m taking the under in this contest.

- David Pastrnak, Anytime Goal Scorer: FanDuel, +145 - While Pastrnak tallied just 29 goals last season, he did add 71 assists for 100 points. The Bruins face a Rangers’ squad that was middle of the road (15th with 3.04 goals per game) in goals against last season.
In addition, Pastrnak enjoys squaring off with the Blueshirts. In his career, he’s faced New York 39 times, tallying 18 goals and dishing out 31 assists for 49 points. Pastrnak also has 229 goals and 263 assists for 492 points in 412 games at TD Garden in his career. With the talent that he brings to the table, look for Pastrnak to light the lamp here for the Bruins.
- Igor Shesterkin, Rangers Over 23.5 Saves: DraftKings, -120 Shesterkin, despite playing in only 51 games, faced the 13th-most shots of any goaltender in the league (1,425) last season. That was actually an improvement as in the previous three seasons, he faced the ninth, seventh and most shots in the league. - Morgan Geekie, Bruins Over 1.5 Shots on Goal: Hard Rock, -130 Geekie had a breakout season last year for the Bruins. He scored 39 goals and added 29 assists for 68 points in 81 games. It marked his second straight year over 30 goals as he potted 33 goals in 2024-25. Geekie had 355 shot attempts (4.38 per game) and 181 shots on goal (2.23 per contest) last season. We only need two shots to cash this prop and I think Geekie gets it done.
