In the lone game on the docket, the Philadelphia Flyers are on the road as they travel to take on the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinals series Saturday night and we have you covered with our Flyers vs. Hurricanes prediction. Philadelphia advanced by beating Pittsburgh 1-0 in overtime at home in Game 6 Wednesday night. That gave the Flyers a 4-2 series victory.

Carolina downed Ottawa 4-2 on the road last Saturday to sweep the Senators. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Hurricanes own an 8-1-1 advantage. Carolina held a 3-0-1 edge in the regular season this year. The Flyers prevailed 3-2 in a shootout at home in the most recent matchup April 13. Let’s break down this Flyers vs. Hurricanes matchup.

Flyers Seek to Steal Game 1

Philadelphia roared to a 3-0 series advantage over the Penguins in the opening round and withstood back-to-back defeats in Games 4 and 5. The Flyers scrapped, battled and clawed their way to a victory in Game 6. That allowed them to advance to the second round for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

In Game 6, offense was hard to find but the Flyers got the marker they needed to earn the win and advance. The first period saw Philadelphia outshot by a 12-11 margin though the teams skated off scoreless at the first intermission. In the second period, the Flyers owned a 10-7 shot edge with neither side lighting the lamp, keeping the game scoreless after 40 minutes of action. The third period saw Philadelphia outshot 13-5 with neither team scoring, keeping the game 0-0 at the end of regulation.

In overtime, the Flyers were outshot 10-6 but scored the decisive goal to secure the win. Cam York tallied the game winner with his first goal of the postseason at 17:32 off assists from Matvei Michkov and Noah Cates. Dan Vladar stopped all 42 shots he faced to earn the shutout win for the Flyers, who lost the shot battle 42-32. Vladar (4-2-0, 1.61 GAA, .936 save percentage, two shutouts in the playoffs) gets the start in goal here.

Hurricanes Rested and Ready

Carolina, after a trio of low-scoring affairs, saw a little more offensive firepower in Game 4 on the road in Ottawa. In the end, it didn’t matter as they doubled up the Senators to close things out and sweep the series. Against Ottawa in Game 4, Carolina was stingy in their own end and that helped them put the Senators away. In the opening period, the Hurricanes were outshot 8-7 and skated off with the game scoreless after 20 minutes of action. The second period saw Carolina outshot 10-9 with both teams scoring once. That left the game tied at one at the second intermission. Taylor Hall opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at 15:15 with assists going to Mark Jankowski and Eric Robinson. Ottawa leveled the score less than two minutes later.

In the third period, Carolina owned a 14-9 advantage in shots and outscored Ottawa 3-1 to earn the win. Logan Stankoven gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 advantage with his fourth goal of the playoffs, on the power play, at 9:10 of the period. K’Andre Miller and Hall drew the assists. Sebastian Aho made it a 3-1 game with an empty net goal, his second of the postseason, at 17:38. Assists on that marker went to Seth Jarvis and Sean Walker.

After Ottawa tallied to narrow the margin to 3-2, Aho hit the empty net again. His second goal of the game and third of the postseason at 18:45 sealed the win. Jarvis and Jalen Chatfield drew the assists on that marker. Frederik Andersen made 25 saves for the Hurricanes, who owned a 30-27 advantage in shots, in the win. Andersen (4-0-0, 1.10 GAA, .955 save percentage, shutout) is slated between the pipes here.

Flyers vs. Hurricanes Prediction

If what we saw in the first round is any indication, this one could be a rock fight. These are two of the three stingiest teams (the other being Colorado) in terms of limiting the opposition offensively. Philadelphia has a pair of shutouts in the opening round while Carolina has one of their own. All four meetings between the teams in the regular season were decided in overtime or shootout. Carolina has the experience factor going for them but the Flyers are playing with newfound confidence. The Hurricanes likely win here but it’s probably another one-goal contest. Therefore, take the Flyers on the puck line here.

Our Prediction: Flyers +1.5 (BetMGM, -145)
